The keyway and or the dot on the crank should be line at 12 oclock. You will see a point on the oil pump housing to go by. On the camshaft the pointer will be at 12 oclock also. Use the O on the camshaft to the top at mark. Be sure to look at the dist. roter to make sure that it is pointing at the #1 spark plug wire. I could get 180 out of time. If you do it right it should start up right away. then you can use a timing light to finish it.

hi,i also have a 1997 maza 626,you it is reccommed that you change the timing belt and the water pump at the same time,if you just change the timeing belt, then the water pump will go and you would have to do it all over again, you would be paying double. The timeing belt is together with the water pump,so you have to change every 70,000miles....Shop around..i got one guy for 500,anthor for420 dollors,it could take one day max two, don;t pay over 500 dollor's for this....

Timing belts must always be handled carefully and kept completely free of dirt, grease, fluids and lubricants. This includes any accidental contact from spillage, fingerprints, rags, etc. These same precautions apply to the pulleys and contact surfaces on which the belt rides. The belt must never be crimped, twisted or bent. Never use tools to pry or wedge the belt into place. Such actions will damage the structure of the belt and possibly cause breakage.
