1987 Jeep Cherokee miss fire 2200 RPM to 3200 RPM

Catch?
cranks fast
starts every time.
idles fine hot or cold , or both? hot idle not too fast.
i race engine , in park and neutral, I can hit 3500 rpm easy, can you.
i release brakes, (brakes are not packed in ICE , are they?)
I select 1gear or reverse (A/T or m/t)
the car moves or dont move, which is it, my guess catch = no move at all.
I try to drive, i look at RPM and MPH
RPM moves up and MPH track.
track means they both move in a linear progression.
RPM rises and for all RPM increases MPH also increases.
does it?
if all that works then we have an engine power issue.

If the engine has a rough idle you know you have a miss-fire or other problem with one or more cylinders.
When you shift into overdrive the engine is working harder than in normal drive because of the lower torque/RPM.
So any slight miss under normal conditions will be magnified in overdrive or with the ac on.
See if you can nail down the cause for the rough idle.

Try this. Turn the key on, do not start the vehicle. Absence the needle on the speedo. It should move down and then back up. Before it moves back up turn off the key. Repeat this until the needle is at zero. Then start the vehicle. If the needle goes back to a spot other than zero, you may have to take it for a quick drive, than the speedo head is likely bad. Sounds a whole lot like a dirty or malfuncitionig idle air control valve. A coil would generally show up as a miss under load or high rpm, crank sensors generally work or they dont, only sometimes giving you a miss, but that would be all the time at any rpm. Computer, I doubt for too many reasons to list. Could also be related to a bad throttle position sensor or a very slight vacuum leak.

Your engine is stumbling "off idle" - as it switches from idle to throttle control. The idle air motor regulates the air flow and engine speed at idle. If the idle is smooth but the stumble occurs just as the throttle is pressed this isn't the problem, The MAP sensor is mounted in the middle of the firewall behind the engine just below the hood. It has to sense the manifold vacuum drop when the throttle is opened. This my first suspect. Second would be the fuel pressure regulator. If it runs O.K. after you get it going, this is a weak suspect unless it loses power when pulling. A bad fuel pump, again low fuel pressure. Just like the squirt from the accelerator pump in the carburetor days, the injectors have to deliver a good stiff shot of fuel when the throttle opens to keep the engine from stumbling. The MAP sensor will tell the ECM a squirt is needed but the fuel system has to have the pressure to deliver.
