It rained and rained while we drove to Boston Saturday (3/29/14). We drove from our Motel in Coolidge Corners to our friend's place in Medford. Then to Symphony Hall in Back Bay and then took our friend home to Medford and we finally drove back to Coolidge Corner to our Motel. It rained all day and all night. I got up Sunday morning and began to load the car to drive home and found that the rear right footwell had about a 1/16 inch of water above the carpet surface. Where did that come from? The car was locked all night and all doors were closed while we drove. What is the source of the water and how can it be prevented from recurring?
I have had water intermittently in the right rear trunk area (below the battery) every since an rear end accident. The dealer tells me that there is a vent back there that gets clogged up or opened up and lets water get in there. Not sure that I believe that, but that's the best explanation that they could give me.

I apologize for my recommended fix before. I thought that you were getting water in the back carpet area, trunk area. I also had water that leaked in from the roof area of the hatch back because of the rear end accident. When you open the hatchback you will see a seam toward the top of the opening. Apparently the force of the impact broke the body seal at that area and water leaked into the back seat area as well as the water in the battery area. I hope this helps.
Wow ! I was rear ended and didn' t think the body work (repair) was in any way deficient except that my rear wheels are slightly out of alignment. I didn't find out about that until long after the repair so I never bothered trying to get satisfaction on that. But it may well be that the same leak you describe has happend to my car.
Thank you Dennis !

SOURCE: 2002 Toyota RAV4 passenger side floor Water
Hi, we also have a 2002 Toyota Rav4 and developed a leak in the front driver's side of the car. After much research, we discovered that the drain wells from our sun/moon roof were clogged. If you have one of these, I suggest that you open the sun roof and look carefully. You will notice some tiny little holes in front and in the rear of the sun/moon roof tracks. Over time, these become clogged with dust and debris. You need to find a long, sturdy piece of thin wire and run it down the holes. To test if you have properly unclogged these, take a small amount of water and pour it down the holes. You should see water coming out of the drain wells under the car around the rear of the front tires. Hope this helps.

You may have a buildup of A/C condensate water in the A/C cooler box. Start the car up, and run the A/C; you should start to see water dripping out from under the car onto the street. If not, the A/C condensate tube may be blocked or dislodged from the A/C box. The water then leaks out of the box onto your floor. The drain is on the pass side, under the dash, close to the center console. The pipe goes thru the body. This is a very common issue.

pull your carpet up near the leak area and look for muddy body seams. it is possible one of the factory body seams are leaking- possibly in the cowl(under wipers) area, especially if it leaks when the car is sitting. there will be dirt/mud around the seams that are leaking. also you can check door seals by running the car on HIGH DEFROST with all doors and windows closed. spray around with a 50/50 soapy water solution. obviously bubbles will form around your leak.

SOURCE: Rainwater pooling inside passenger cabin
I suspect that water is pooling in the cowl area (in front of the windshield). Since it's at an angle, the water can't drain out the usual drain. This is also where the air is drawn in for the heat/a/c. I think that the water that collects is flowing in through the climate control system and coming out the floor vent. If you want to test it, jam some paper towels up in the floor vents and recirculating air intake and see if they get wet. If you just want to solve the problem, try backing into the space.

The problem is with the tail lights. What is happening is the tail light seal must have gone bad. What I did was put black silicone rubber sealer on the tag light and body frame. That stopped it for my 2005. I did it on both sides. Make sure you make that u channel go all the way up to the seal. good luck
?? But how would water from the tail lights make its way to the rear passenger's footwell?
