I scanned my car with a basic OBD2 scanner which put out two codes, after parts replaced the codes went away but the car still won't start. Can ECU be bad but still put out codes?

No, they work or they don't. The codes need to be cancelled.

A basic scan tool is not the same as a professional grade scan tool computer that cost $5,000!

'year make model' in all questions please as first 3 words.

My 04 Chevy Monte Carlo Has a check engine Light on..I place it on The Obd2 ..But No codes are showing...What could it be.. I thought maybe start with the Plugs..

Start with a proper diagnostic scan using a quality scan tool. Cheap scan tools may not communicate with the various modules in the vehicle and therefore will not display a code. Don't toss parts unnecessarily at the vehicle until you properly scan and retrieve the stored codes and then repair from there

When I use a diagnostic scan machine to pull vehicle codes, where do I decipher the codes to know the diagnosis please.

If your code scanner does not provide definitions for the codes you can google the code letter and number. Most manufactures use the same definitions for their codes. Just type in your vehicle model and the code

What are the symptoms of a bad PCM?

Symptoms of a Bad PCM , vehicle won't start an run sometimes ! You have other modules involved here ! ABS an BRAKE light lit are problems with the anti-lock brakes ! A sensor maybe ! You need to have the vehicles modules scanned for DTC's - diagnostic trouble codes . An depending what year , make an model vehicle it can have several hundred different codes possible. Newer vehicles have up wards of 10 or more modules .Your going to need a better grade scan tool like the one in this video ! Auto Repair The OTC Genisys Touch Scan Tool Sounds like you need to take this to a pro !

My engine light came on it said engine power reduced check esc transmission off

What is the year make and model of the vehicle? If the "check engine" light is on that means the vehicle is trying to tell you that there is a problem and the codes need to be scanned. If you can safely drive it to an auto zone or advanced auto they will scan the codes for you for free. You should get a fault code(s) that starts with a P then four numbers, ex. p0601. These codes will basically tell you what could be wrong in the car. I personally recommend that once they scan the codes, have them clear the codes then scan it again to see which codes, if any, come back. The more info from you, on something like this, the better.

Tim

2003 Nissan Murano with 130,000 miles problems

This is way over the head of the home repairman, you will need the dealer to look into these codes.

I have a mitsubishi montero 1999 and the code is p1720

The Engine Control Module (ECM) receives two vehicle speed sensor signals via the Control Area Network (CAN) communication line. One is sent from Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) / Traction Control System (TCS) / Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) control unit, and the other is from Transmission Control Module (TCM). ECMuses these two signals for engine control. Possible Causes: - VDC/TCS/ABS to ECM circuit harness is open or shorted
- TCM to ECM circuit harness is open or shorted
- VDC/TCS/ABS to ECM circuit connectors
- TCM to ECM circuit connectors
- Faulty revolution sensor

VSC light is on and my mechanic doesnt know where to start. Can you help??

That isn't a mechanic, seriously, get away from that shop

You have a VSC Light on your dash
Any light on your dash is an OBD2 Fault &
most likely a Code will be present

Been that way since 1980 thru 2012 model vehicles
That is 32 years. So no mechanic

You always start with code related issues first

A real mechanic would check for codes with a professional
scan tool & go to a trouble chart for your vehicle & work
on diagnosing that vehicle system (VSC)

If necessary ,component test a sensor or other part, before
even considering replacement based on a code alone
