No fm radio static

old post, and my first radio noise post.
im an old radio guy USN, and ex ham.
Q1: AM or FM? (even on cassette or CD?)
1: bad antenna, and for sure, there are upgrades !
2: too far from station, AM is worst for static, but FM has shorter distance for same station power. (I heard XERB in VietNam! AM)
3: bad radio. (rare for both am and fm bad)
4: bad alternator can sing, play with throttle and it sings higher for higher RPM bingo. stop engine, singing gone?, bingo. Alternator.
5: and last ignition noise, so stop engine still have ignition popping sounds. no more? , then Ignition noise, clicks or pops. (spark)
6: noise has 2 sources , radiated or conducted.
if conducted on power line, 12v to radio , we can buy a filter to stop that.
older cars do this. what year is yours. a honda what a 73 civic?

the operator guide in the glove box , covers time set.
all radios do that.
and if not normal, the antenna is broken or fell off the rear of radio.

if got static switch to FM ,
many AM stations, broadcase to am and fm same content.
so use FM. its static free. (by design) but does fade sooner.
you can in fact hear AM station 12,000 miles away it night
called super stations, 50,000 watt stations. ive done this many time.

did you try another car, in same spot , and same station?
are you in under ground parking?

LOOK FOR BROKE OR MISSING ANTENNA.IF ALL IS GOOD RADIO ANTENNA LEAD ON RADIO COULD CAME A LOOSE OR RADIO RECEIVER IT SELF FAULTY.MAKE SURE RADIO BAND IS ON FM INSTEAD AM.BECAUSE AM STATIONS HAS STATIC.

i would get the alternator checked, sounds like its leaking ac current which can also kill the battery

check antenna cable connections at radio & antenna.suspect power antenna if equipped.

replace the attenna if that does not work the radio is the problem

check antenna make sure its tight and connected.

Check antenna connections at radio and antenna assy.. Poor connections will only receive AM and hardly any FM

Sounds like you either left something loose or lost a piece of shielding. Was there a filter on the antenna that you forgot to put back on?

THIS SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A RADIO PROBLEM. IT MAY BE WORTH YOUR TIME TO HAVE A DODGE DEALER CHECK THE RADIO TO SEE IF INDEED THE RADIO IS BAD, BUT THEN YOU HAVE THE OPTION TO REPLACE THE OEM RADIO WITH A NICE AFTERMARKET RADIO. THESE HAVE COME DOWN IN PRICE DRASTICALLY AND ARE PROBABLY CHEAPER THAN REPLACING THE OEM RADIO. WITH NO SIGNAL OR STATIC ON THE AM BAND SURE SOUNDS LIKE THE AM BAND IS DEAD.
