Since the screws to access the panel are on the side of the door, can anyone suggest how to open the door???? HELP
If you use whats called a slimjim and slide it down on the far left outer side of the window you can access the accuater lever or rod for the door. Any autozone are police officer can show you exactly how to do it. It's real easy.

I had the same problem and spent hours with the slimjim with no luck. The lock Mech needs1 to slide to the side before it will line up with the catch. I ended up removing the seat from the car. This will give you access to the door pad. The hard part is getting at the screws between the door pad and the dash. Once the door pad is off you can get at the mech. Slide it over and then you can pull it up and open the door. You can get a used door lock motor from a junkyard but if it is from a diffrent year you may have to change the linkage. Before you put the door pad back on make sure it locks and unlocks several times. You may have to adjust the linkage a little. It is not a difficult job just take your time and keep track of all the screws. Good luck!

try taking apart and cleanig all contacts first. make sure you are getting power to switch. Sounds more switches are going bad. They usually last about 5 to 7 years before they start going out.

I do have a book on the 1996 but no on me but I have had a problem with it the same, Get in and sit in the drivers set and push lock from the in side and then do the same but this time unlock it and then get out and try to use the remote. if no then try to do the same thing but in the passenger side. lock and then unlock. no then call the ford dealer shop and they have a alarm department that will help you and I know because I had then do a job on one of my other cars and I was charged $20.00 he did it on a side job. sounds like a plastic Sir clip of course you say external handel detached from door consider linkage clip has fallen down!

Did you try pulling the door handle? they normally over ride the lock, also a coat hanger will unlock it so yuo can get tothe door to fix.
