Mid sixties Ford 4000. Suddenly decided to make severe grinding noise when trying to engage gears and cannot engage gears. Weirdly this does not always happen. Gears engage OK when engine not running

Hello, you may have more success in the proper category of lawn or farm stuff. Fortunately I have same Tractor. Sounds like clutch fork is not moving clutch the same way each time you press clutch. Could be clutch needs play removed. Sometimes there is a pivot ball for the clutch fork to rest on. When the pivot ball is worn the clutch fork can rock. Also remember RPM to give gears time to stop spinning before changing gears.

How do I fix my car air conditioning stopped when I accelerate

  1. Check the compressor has engaged. Identify the location of your compressor. Look at the pullyer and you should be able to see if it spining or not. The engine running turn the A/C on max cool, set fans high, and make sure that the clutch is engaging on the compressor. The pulley spins any time the engine is running. The center part of the A/C pulley only engages when the A/C is on. If the clutch is engaging and disengaging rapidly, the refrigerant may be low. Airconditioning system blowing hot

Find the AC compressor. The pulley on it has an electric clutch that allows the compressor to run when the AC is on and not when it is off. With the engine running you should be able to see if the clutch is turning or not. The pulley turns all the time the engine is running only the clutch behind the pulley starts and stops. Look at the pulley with the AC off. Have someone turn it on and see if the clutch engages to turn the compressor. If it doesn't engage there are a couple thing that could be wrong. First the clutch has burned out and no longer works. The fuse on the AC clutch is blown. Check the fuse. More likely, if the cold air has been getting warmer, the AC system has a refrigerant leak. The system has a low pressure switch that prevents the clutch from engaging when the refrigerant pressure is too low. If the fuse is good then you need to have a qualified AC Technician check the system.

I can put my 1994 toyota tercel in gear without pushing in the clutch, what could the problems be?

Do you mean with the engine off? If so, that is normal. The clutch just allows you to disconnect from engine when it running. With the clutch released and engine running the gears are spinning all the time. When in neutral, the chain of gears to the final drive is incomplete. When you engage a gear you are completing a chain of gear connections to the wheels. If engine is running, you will grind gears untill you press clutch, making a temporary break in the chain, allowing the gears to stop spinning and you to engage one.

You can infact use 1st gear as a kind of parking brake as it holds the car from rolling (in most cases) , with engine OFF, - BUT this is not advised as the only parking brake.

Knocking when engine gets hot and car stopped

The fan clutch can make a knocking noise when it tries to engage. At idle it will have a rhythm to it when it tries to engage. You will have an over heating condition and the air conditioning may not work properly.

The fix is to replace the fan clutch and reprogram the engine control module.
