1989 Porsche 928 S4 How do you add Dextron automatic transmission fluid if needed. It appears it's added through a bolt situated above the drain plug at the rear of the trans., but ????????????
Mine is an 88 cant imagine its different, thereis a plastic tank on the rhs of the trans that has a screw off lid, you will need the car on stands or a hoist level and with the oil at opperating temp you will also need a bottle pump or some type of plunger to fill it the engine must be running and add the fluid slowly allow time for it to be taken into the trans repeat until at the mark and stays there
Exactly correct. Just remember that if you intend to drain and refill the system, you also need a 17mm allen wrench and make sure the top plug is pulled first, just in case you empty with the bottom plug then can't get the top one out for refilling if that is yur choice. It's all easy, just need a few certified ramps, a bottle and stem/tube to refill into the threaded cap opening or top 17mm plug. Refill with plug, top off with cap opening. EASY!
No no no. Don't do what Kenneth belaire said whatever you do! The transmission is filled from the fill tank on the passenger side of the transmission (unless you have bought the factory fill adapter).

Yep, just done this on my 99 S4.
Looking at level with engine off it was up to "MAX" but with engine running the resevoir was almost empty! Start engine and shift through gears a couple of times, leave engine running (handbrake on/transmission in Park for safety) and look at level in plastic tank. Top up to "MIN" mark and all will be fine. you may need to do this a couple of times until the fluid level settles, as the other guy said.
Mine took nearly a litre of fluid. (Dexron 2 or 3) and it cured the harsh shifting when cold/slip on 2-3 change when cold.
Whist your under there, checking the level run a spanner over all the bolts which hold on the bottom plate of the auto Transmission. They will more than likely just need a tweak, mine leaked out over a litre of fluid due to the gasket shrinking in a short space of time and that was the trouble. cheers -- John from Australia
