Hi my name is kerwin and i have a 2000 nissan maxima and the problem that i am haveing is that when the car is started in the morning it revs at about 1200 rpm and then it drops in rpms and sounds like it is dying. then once it is running it seems to fluctuate in rpms. it sounds like it is at 700 rpm then it drops to 500 rpm. also when i am driving the would rev between 3000 and 4000 rpms then it would feel like it dies down to 1200 to 2000 rpms then it would catch it self then rev again for about 2 mins then it would do it again. this dead period seems to last for a few seconds. any help on this issue would help me greatly to solve this problem which has been baffeling me for a while. kerwin
Idle air control valves short out all the time on these models. You can ohm the motor to check it, but the down side to a shorted iac valve is that it shorts out the ecm if not repaired quickly. when the valve shorts, 12 volts is supplied directly to the ecm and burns the circuit board. The other option is the air flow meter, this is also a very common problem but typically a p0171/p0174 would be stored in self diag.
Kerwin,
There are numerous possible causes for this problem. To many to go into on a forum like this. However, one very common cause is a dirty idle control motor. Remove the control motor and clean it out using aerosol carburetor cleaner. Re-install the Idle air control motor using a new gasket or O-ring and see if your idle situation improves. If this fixes the problem, but the problem re-occurs in a few days or a week, buy and install an new idle air control motor.

I had same problem on my 2000 max se. i changed the idle air control valve and fixed the problem.
Where is my iac valve located at on my 2000 maxima?
