check to see if any water is in the oil by looking at dipstick, oil on dipstick will be milky looking, if not its the intake gasket.

Sounds more to me like you have a faulty thermostat, is your fan coming on? if not its your thermostat< its not opening when the car gets up to temp allowing the water around the engine into the radiator to cool, if youve no sludge in the oil i would def go for the thermostat, easy way to check take it out and put it in boiling water and watch to see if it opens.

Middle is ideal, if it gets to the red it's overheating. I'll tell you from experience that not fun! lol

How about a temperature sensor? If it's faulty it could be sending the wrong messages to your computer and your dash light.

Pull the connecting wire off the temperature sensor and ground it to see if the guage goes up. If it does then your sensor unit is faulty and must be replaced!
