Alternator belt braking would not stall the engine but your dash would of lit up like a christmas tree. you will need to have the engine on an obd reader to see what the problem is. did the belt snap or was it stripped ? alternator over load would cut the engine out check the fuse in the engine fuse box there is 2, 80 amp fuse in there check these are fine.

Does the volvo 2000 s40 have a timeing belt or timeing chain?

The 1.9 Liter has a cam belt which MUST be replaced at 105,000 miles. Also replace the water pump which is driven by the cam belt to save labor costs later one. This is an INTERFERENCE engine and as such if the belt breaks you will have serious engine damage. Therefore do not neglect this service.

The AC fan in my car (volvo s40-99) does not work

If you are talking about the blower motor fan, inside the car, look for a blown fuse,or a bad fan relay. The blower motor relay could be mounted near the blower motor,or in the relay box, look for the lables to guide you to it.If the relay, and the fan are fine, then replace the blower motor.
