The liftgate trim panel probably has a couple of screws in ti and several "Christmas" trees that pop out of the liftgate when you pry the panel off. If they break, most hardware stores have them. Try to put a thin screwdriver on each side of the pin retainer.

I have the same issue on my 2002 Escape. I hear the cylinder motors engaging on the doors but not the liftgate so all I can assume is the wiring loom on the passenger side upper corner of the liftgate needs attention. That is where the wiring is for the door motor that releases the window and gate. I will post again after I solve this. 6/28/2009

Yes there are two handles or lift latches- one for the whole lift gate and one to open the glass part only.
My lift gate will not open. When I push the button it clicks but will not lift. Pleas assist.
