climate here is very hot, so the thermostat was taken off many years ago.

The thermostat is to designed to keep the engine at the right temperature. Taking it out will make your car run hotter than it should since all the hot anti freeze is going to the engine all the time. replace the thermostat no matter how hot it is in your area.

thanks for your help Ali Galam. Do you know how the thermostat works, I mean, at what temperature does it open to let the hot water go to the radiator and cooled water go to the motor?.

Replace thermostat. If that does not solve problem, suspect leak in head gasket.

No its not true, the cooling fan comes on when the coolant temp reaches a certain point it closes the switch in the temp sensor wich in turn closes the relay and powers the cooling fan,the reason it comes on with the A/C is that it's wired to bypass the temp sensor and associated relay because the A/C compressor forces the motor to work harder and the coolant temp to rise significantly faster, the relay needs to be replaced or you will overheat the motor and possibly cause serious damage.

SOURCE: My Jeep Cherokee 95 Radiator temperature is always hot

100 degrees f? That is way too cold Either you have the wrong thermostat or it is wide open. 180 degrees is nominal and give you the best performance.. With AC on, expect 190 to 200 degrees. We are talking farhrnheit and not ccelsius, correct?

SOURCE: radiator fan motor on 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I hope that you haven't went out and bought a whole new assembly due to the other poster's response. Yes you can just replace the motor otherwise why would you be able to buy the motors separately. There's usually 3 bolts that hold the fan shroud in that you have to remove along with the electrical plug. It takes some manipulation to get the entire fan/shroud assembly out (it helps to have someone underneath the vehicle guiding it) but once out you will see a clip over the top of the fan. It's kind of a challenge to get off but using a hammer and a flat head screwdriver you can work it off. Be aware that you have to put the clip back on so don't pry it off and ruin it....just kind of chisel it off. Once off, the fan blade comes off with a little effort. There's your exposed motor. Take off the 3 bolts and pull out the wires and replace it with your new motor. I hope this helps others....I couldn't find this information anywhere and figured it out along the way.

Dimmer switch

you could always add a good pair of aftermarket fog lights that come with a relay kit and switch you mount to the dash .The only thing is by most laws you cannot run high beams w/aftermarket fog lights on at the same time only low beam ,they have to be manually turned off for oncoming traffic. You can get a good set for around $65.00.These kits come with easy instructions.

My 96 jeep shuts off in traffic and at stop lights

This sounds like a bad idle air control valve, but also make sure the throtlebody is clean, use a toothbrush and some throtlebody cleaner, spray and clean with brush, make sure to open plate by having someone hold gas pedal to floor, after cleaning if truck still stalls then replace the idle air control valve,

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Overheating

Three possible solutions:

1. Bad Thermostat

2. Fan Relay (most likely)

3. Bad Fan

When the GC reaches a temp of 180 Deg. F the fan relay sends a signal to the fan to turn on, once the temp lowers (around 155 Deg. F) the relay turns off the fan, and so the cycle continues. If the relay is bad there will be no signal to the fan to run. While you are driving your vehicle there is ambient air moving thru the radiator, cooling the engine, but once you encounter slow/heavy traffic or stop there is no air moving and the temp goes up, the fan will not kick in and the vehicle will overheat.

If the fan motor is not working the same will happen, but a more expensive fix, as the motor comes with the fan.

If the Thermostat is stuck in the open position, the water travels to fast in the engine and heat exchanging is not an efficient process, therefore the vehicle might overheat when stopped or in slow traffic.

Fan motor switch on 98 jeep cherokee only works on high

In many cases this is the result of the blower motor resistor having gone bad. They are often located in the housing that holds the blower motor but I cannot say 100% for sure with the Jeep Cherokee.
