1998 Tiburon not shifting into overdrive when warm

I have a 1998 Tiburon. It has 170k on the odometer. It shifts normally until it warms up, then the car feels like it's going into neutral instead of overdrive while giving it gas. I am currently driving it with the O/D off. Is there any thing that can be done besides replace the transmission?

SOURCE: 1996 Corolla Auto Transmission problem

Hi. 2005 Corolla CE. It's normal. They tend to do this when upshifting form 1st to 2nd gear. No timing chain readjustment needed.

96 Corolla. Overdrive not working properly, if not engaging after 45mph constantly. If driving on the city, is normal, but not after 45mph, when the car is trying to engage overdrive in order to save gas and preserve the trans gears. If not able to get help at the dealership, find another one and explain them the situation.

SOURCE: f150 transmission neutralizes when shifts to overdrive

I have that exact same truck and transmission and My Transmission did the exact same thing about a year ago and there was some kind of snap ring inside the transmission that broke. I originally thought it had to be an electirical problem because the truck shifted fine until OD or if i turned OD off. The 4r70w is a light transmission and i would suggest you have a shift kit put in and they make a heavier kit to beef it up.. Sorry its probably not the new you were looking for.

SOURCE: 1997 Chevy 1500 P/U 4x4 small V8. Transmission shifting issue.

you may be confusing the torque converter clutch engagement with o.d. this trans has a problem with the T.C.C. regulator valve wearing out the valve body bore. this will cause the converter clutch to engage only sometimes or not at all. this will set a P1870 code in the control module. when this code is stored in the controller, ( check engine light may or may not be on), it increases the pressure in the transmission causing the 1-2 shift to be harsh. ask a local tranny shop to scan the vehicle ( most will do this for free) if this is the problem they can either fix your valve body (sonnax parts) or replace it with an upgraded valve body. hope this helps

SOURCE: 1996 dodge ram 2500 auto transmission not shifting properly

Well, first do the service. Pull the pan down and look for metal shavings. If there is metal shavings your in for a transmission. If not, you may have a problem with one of the transmissions shift solenoids located near the valve body.
P.S. The Duramax has the Allison 1000 transmission not the dodge cummins and they are one of the best trannys on the market.

This is a normal condition, the nag transmission control module needs to see a certain temperature of the fluid before shifting into overdrive this is due to fluid viscosity, if the fluid is too thick
due to cold temps the pump cannot supply enough pressure to fully engage
the overdrive clutch, if it did you would have slippage in overdrive

Not supposed to shift into overdrive until the engine is warmed up and trans fluid reaches a certain temp. Accelerating in overdrive on a cold engine or cold transmission results in high emissions. so they lock it out until temps increae

Won't shift onto overdrive until engine warms up.

That's actually a feature, not a problem. The emissions control system will not let it go into OD until it's warmed up.

If your truck warms up in a normal amount of time, then you're all set.

Last year, my 4Runner started taking too long to warm up, so it wouldn't go into OD for a long time. In my case, it was that the thermostat was stuck open, so coolant was flowing freely even when the engine was still cold. Replacing the thermostat was quick and easy, and it's good as new again.

My 1998 spotage will not shift into overdrive untill motor starts to warm up. Is there a fix for this or is this normal. detjah

I was just told by a Kia dealership that is the design of the vehicle. It will not shift into overdrive until the vehicle has warmed up. The guy who told me this says his Toyota does exactly the same. So you don't have a problem. Your Kia is working as it is designed to work. Hope this helps!!

Shifting problems

The transmission/computer is designed not to go into overdrive until it reaches a certain temp and I don't remember what the temp is. Mine does same thing and it has 250,000 miles on it. When you start your truck up do you start it and warm up in neutral? The transmission fluid won't flow unless it is. There is know way to force it to shift into overdrive until it warms to the set temp.

Hope this helps
