1995 Firebird 3.4 LTR, Automatic. Car had a coolant smell and was dying at stop signs.

1995 Firebird 3.4 LTR, Automatic. Stepson advised that the car had a coolant smell and was dying at stop signs. Found and replaced bad pump and Crankshaft position sensor. Now car barely starts (ether helps), hesitates BADLY when trying to accelerate, and when starting from a cold start, will idle fairly normal up to operating temp, then idle will jump to 1500-2500 RPM. No Service engine light is on.

Service engine light came on, engine settled down to about 900RPM, and the car was driavable...for about 20 minutes. Suddenly the SEL went off, and the RPM just shot right up to about 2500. Once I shut it down, it will not start without many tries. No codes in computer. HELP!!!

SOURCE: Cold Start Idle Issue

Problem might be the air control valve, it's located at the right side rear of intake manifold and has a hose going to the air intake duct from the air cleaner, as a test you might try pinching off that hose when the idle is a problem.

Signs blown head gasket

Hi there:
Pay attention. here is the most common symptoms a Blown Head Gasket are:
- Your car is overheating. You know it's not the Fan or Thermostat.
- White Smoke is coming out of the tail-pipe and it smells like Anti-Freeze being cooked.
- The car won't start:
* You have already verified it's not an Ignition System problem because you have Spark coming out at all of the Spark Plug Wires.
* You know it's not a Lack of Fuel, because you have verified that the Fuel Pump is delivering Fuel to the Fuel Injectors.
- The Engine Oil is thick and tan to off-white color.

Hope this helps.

What should I look for to safeguard myself when

the v-6 engines have a problem with the intakes leaking coolant in the rear of the engine, you can smell the coolant as it leaks on the exhaust pipe after you shut it down from a drive,or if you put the car on the hoist, you should be able to see the small leak.

1995 4.9 ltr 78k mi. When car is stopped for red

Probably an oil pump, will it still do this if you rev the engine a little while stopped? If not then you have an oil pump that could be failing or hopefully it is the pressure sensor that is off. either way don't chance it
