You should have a code stored. This is the first thing you should check for. Also the DATA can indicate what is happening . Also the age of the truck could indicate that you could have glow plugs issues or oil saturated a connector or something.

96 dodge caravan 3.3. Runs great but while driving loses power and backfires, pull off road will idle rough till dies. Runs good for couple days, weeks and same prob occurs.

i would recommend getting the OBD codes read as this will point to which switch/sensor/circuit is at issue , i would expect it could be the crank sensor from your description but the OBD will tell you definately what needs looking at

What kind of repair is required when I get code po306

Miss-fire detected at cylinder # 6 . If it feels like it is running rough (miss) try pulling plug and inspecting to start with and make sure plug wire is on properly.

Engine running rough on take off

Under load on take off from a stop or under heavy acceleration when already in motion could be one or more spark plug wires breaking down/misfiring.
You may be able to duplicate by opening hood, have someone set park brake and hold foot hard on regular brake pedal, block wheels also and press on gas pedal to simulate the loaded condition. Stand off to side, not in front of van and see if the engine misses and you may hear a snapping as the spark arc to ground. More common on the 3.3 engine.

Great Name for your question,

I hate to ask the obvious, but I'd feel really bad if I didn't and it turned out to be the problem, so....

The Transmission fluid is at the proper level when warm and in neutral with the engine running on a level surface?

Now I feel bad....

I do not have the solution for you but I will make a suggestion if you do not get an answer from someone else. Find a 2000 Dodge Caravan like yours at a used car lot and pop the hood and take a look. That may be your quickest solution.
