You have a bad Parking brake, Brake, or Neutral safety switch. Not the end of the world on this one.

SOURCE: Clanking noise when in park, louder with ac turned on

Pull the engine accessory drive belt off and check the pulley bearing and the nose of the water pump and AC compressor for play, this may be the AC compressor pulley bearing or the water pump pulley bearing

SOURCE: Awful noise from the transmission Will not shift

look for a re-built replacement tranny. probably cheaper than having yours re-built. also, could be problem with electronics. won't be cheap, either way! get a couple estimates- from shops you trust-ask your friends for recommendations! depending on mileage, and other 'little problems', you may want to consider a newer used vehicle. i know (believe me!) times are tough- but a car that won't go is useless! if you can get it fixed for a reasonable price, and it's otherwise in good condition, get it fixed! make sure you maintain it (oil change, fluid checks, brake replacements, timing belt replacements, etc.) then repairing or replacing the tranny may make financial sense. do the math!
good luck!

No Reverse and the fluid is dirty and smells funny.

Sounds like you blew out your reverse belt/gear in the transmission. Probably going to need a transmission rebuild/replacement.

Hi, I own a 1997 Ford E 350 Econoline, I have the following transmission engagement problem: Truck will not start: Transmission will not engage any gear, neutral or park. The shift lever feels like is not...

The weld on the manual lever is known to break loose. First, with the wheels off the ground, with the lever in the park position, does the drive shaft lock in park? If yes or no sometimes, drop the trans pan. I bet the nut on the lever camd loose.
