What do you do when you replace the sun shell in a 4L60E and put it all back together and the motor will start, but won't shift? Also, the reader in the dash says it's not in any gear, and the speedom

Does it Spin or Whine or SLIP as you it is shifting? These trucks are known for having SHELL Issues.. I just tore mine down on Saturday and this is what I had. a Broken Sun Shell and now I am going to have to get "THE BEAST" Sun Shell. It could be your Solenoid's or a Bad Band.. but more than likely, the common problem is Sun Shell
The other Common issue is Burning up the Clutches... another one that happened to me (Still the same 4L60E) went from 1st to 3rd and lost OD (Over Drive)...
You probably have the same problem i just repaired on my surburban. It had 190000 and I lost reverse also. so you may have a reverse sun shell problem. This was common on the 4l60e transmission and when the part wears out you have to have the transmission rebuilt or replaced with a Re-manufactured transmission. Without more information then this is what I can offer.
You have a broken Sun Gear Reaction Carrier (Sun Shell) This is a common problem for the 4L60E transmission. Unfortunately the transmission will need to be removed for this repair.
Any local transmission shop can confirm this with a short road test.
Good luck.
it sound like you broke the sun shell in the transmission.
this is pretty common with the 4l60e transmission, when the sun shell breaks you will lose reverse and fourth gear, the only remedy is to replace the transmssion or have it repaired, the repair will require the transmission be removed and disassembled, you will need to purchase a new sun shell (get a heavy duty replacement) and a papper rubber kit for the repair, the kit costs about $80.00 and the new sun shell is about $65.00, just find a good trans guy to provide the labor.
Transmission model is 4L60E,and the symptoms you are describing is a common failure on these transmissions all the way back to it's predecesor, the 700 R 4 model. The reverse input shell, splines into the low/reverse planetary sun gear. The reverse input shell has a collar with splines made into it,and these splines are prone to stripping, and sometimes the collar itself will break free from the shell.Without the shell functioning,no reverse, and this is likely what you are hearing.Aftermarket companies sell heavy duty, and standard duty, replacements.Eventually, you will lose the forward gears also.Good luck.
