May be the problem is not in the actuator in the case but in the actuator that engages the hub locks . Check for vacuum line / electrical wires faults . The noise may be from the hub lock or from a cv joint in that side.

SOURCE: Front drive, 4 Wheel drive won't engage

Check the switch on the transfercase remove the vacume lines if there is oil in them the switch has to be replaced and the lines should be cleaned out you should also check under the battery tray to make sure the boot is not ripped that controls the leaver to engage the front axel

SOURCE: 1996 suburban makes grinding noise in 2 wheel drive

sounds like the clip on the rear output shaft its probably broke. do this by removing the rear driveshaft, and the tail of the transfer case, there are 4 bolts holding it in place. then grab the output shaft and see if it has any front to back movement. if so pull it all the way to the rear and you should see a groove at the front part of the shaft where the clip goes. Then you should find the pieces fo the clip in the tail housing. One person said he found the replacement clip at a local tranny shop. I am calling the dealership parts counter for a new clip for my 97 Tahoe tomorrow. Hope this helps..

My 04 Tahoe will engage in 4-high or 4-low, you can hear the clunk and in 4-low it is in low gear but it will not engage the front axial, but in 4-auto it will work fine. All lights indicate everything is...

I had a 4 wheel drive suburban..it had issues with the high-lock and low-lock..I just used the auto setting because all four wheels were getting power anyway..only time you need lock is when you plan to go bogging in really deep mud..on snow/ice all you need is all wheel drive..you actually have better control..as long as it works in all wheel you should be fine..also be checking the front hubs.. are yours full time or do you have lock outs..on the axle hubs..thats my question

2002ford explorer sport, the 4 wheel drive high or low

The transfer case may be hanging up, have you ever had it serviced with new fluid? If not do so and drive it for a few miles and try again, if that doesn't fix the issue you will need a shop to inspect the transfer case actuator motor and position contacts.

1992 chevy k2500 4 wheel drive not engaging. was driving in 4 high with no problems. shut truck off and no 4wd. no lights and no 4wd. new rear end, new transmission.

I have a 19934x4 bought it with 4 wheel drive notworking. indicator lights for 4x4 would notlight up but transfer seemed to be shiftin ok. frontaxel woul ot ingauge. I repled the front axel actuator an works fine now no problem. actuator is on the passenger sid back of the front axel pigand has a plug, mine was 2 wireroundpin plug but some have a flat pin 4 wire plug. 70 dollars at NAPA. wasa realy simple replacement didnt even need to jack up the truck. the actuator h a pin that electronically puses out engauging te front axel. a easy test is to put the truck in 4 wheel high. holdthe brak and givei little gas ad havesomeoneelse stand to the side ofthe front of the truck and see if the front axel spins. ifso th actutor is te most likely prblem. hope this helps.

1994 K1500 4 Wheel Drive Issue

No probably not, first check the fuse for the 4wd in the fuse box if that's OK its likely the actuator on the front axle..........providing the shifter handle moves to the proper location and if its push button the lights light in the switch when selected...the actuator plugs into the wiring harness and screws into the front differential.an easy remove and replace part even for a novice.
