The car is stuck in reverse, it will still drive in reverse and start and what not. But, no matter what I do, the shifter will not come out of the reverse gear no matter how hard I try and force it. I need to know what the problem is and how I can fix it by myself. Is it the clutch cable and how do I get at it? How else can I look at it to see what is wrong with it>
Is the shifter tight or loose? if loose there are bushing that go bad Here a link to is the bushing set up

The shifter is tight, it will move around a little bit, but it will not move out of gear no matter what i do
I took apart the gear box, everything looks fine except for i am unsure of one part. There is the silver slider and that will not move very well, and then the deepest i can see, there is a black long piece with a bolt on it that looks like it should line up with the silver slider, do these parts have to be alligned or no

Go to the link and tell what number you are looking at
the part that the bolt (36 goes into) The whole silver part, its not labeled and then underneath in a black part that moves when you move the shifter (also not labeled) i cant figure out if these two parts are supposed to line up because it does not show a bolt to connect them on the picture

SOURCE: 1996 Audi A4 quattro airbags install
The main thing with dealing with airbags is to ground yourself before plugging them in. Any electronics shop can sell you an ESD (electrostatic discharge) wrist strap and ground cord for a few dollars. Use this to ground yourself securely to the frame of the car. This gives a pathway for static electricity in your body to discharge into the car, rather than into the airbag connector, potentially blowing the airbags. All the same, whenever possible, don't sit in front of the bag you're installing in case something goes wrong and it does blow.

GEAR LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT IS UNDER GAITER PLUS REMOVE ASHTRAY .......BUT I WOULD CHECK FOR WORN OR DAMAGED GEAR LINKAGES ....CLUTCH FAULT WOULD BE THE NEXT THING
SOURCE: 1996 audi a4 transmission hard shifting
Get the transmission scanned at the dealership. If it has incorrect gear ratio code stored, it needs a transmission. Only the torque convertor or valve body can be replaced for any repairs at the dealership, so it needs to be diagnosed correctly. Any authorized ZF transmission repair shop can also repair them, more than the Audi dealerships can, so thats another alternative.

you need to have the shifting cable lubricated or replaced.

I now discovered that there is a little black clip on the bottom of the metal plate and it is on one side and not the other, is there supposed to be one on each side?
