Your going to have to get the car scanned for the DTC code. The Check engine light indicates that the ECM has detected an issue with the cars engine or transmission performance. Your hard shifting could be the failure to the Pressure control solenoid (PCS), that would be a DTC code P1811. The PCS is located under the trans axle side cover assembly. IF you go to Auto Zone, they can scan your car free of charge and can give you the step by step instruction to replacing the part that may have failed. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help.

1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Takeoff and excelleration are normal, shifts 1-4 are fine, shifts erratically about 15 min after hitting highway speeds then stops going into overdrive. i noticed the torque

you need to have the bands adjusted in the transmission.. jeeps are known for this issue... takes maybe an hour to adjust all the bands and can be done by just removing the transmission pan and adjusting... if you feel this is something you can do let me know and i will give you a step by step walk through on how to repair..

4T65E transmission hard shifting- can I drive it?

I had a 1995 with the same problem... perfect when cold... slams the gears when warm. I had to have it overhauled. I got by for a long while by up ******* manually, releasing gas pedal just before each shift.

When trans. is warm after extended driving the up shifts are very hard. This only happens during extended driving periods. Around town everything shifts fine.

Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh. All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) for smooth electrical response. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS. Good luck Auto Zone or Parts Source has this part and can be replaced with in 20 min. Both parts store will have the step by step instructions and i believe the cost is around $65.00 for the TPS which is better then a transmission replacement.

Hard shifting after highway driving 1998 tahoe. After driving on the highway (mostly in hot weather) after coming to complete stop the car shifts hard at about 10 mph. Ramdonly does this from time to time....

sounds like your pressure control solenoid inside your trans is sticking you will have to have your pan pulled and have the solenods checked or replaced since it only fails at times it might check out ok when the pan is pulled.

Overdrive Problems

On top of engine as your facing it, there should be what looks like a temp. sending unit with a 2 wire plug on it, chg. that, it sends a signal to trans. when it gets warm enought to shift to overdrive. If trans shifts fine but won't go into overdrive thats most likely the problem.
