2001 f-350 makes a clunking noise when turning sharply

When I turn sharply a a slow speed (pulling out of a parking space, backing out then driveing off) a clunking noise can be heard. On occasion the truck will become "stuck" altogether and i cannot move it without turning it off, putting it in park, and then starting again. None of this occurs while driving in a straight line at normal speeds. 4WD isnt engaged and my hub lock dials are turned firmly to the left. What could be the issue?

A bumping noise in the steering wheel when you turn it

caused by the power steering pump, a small price to pay to pay for light steering at slow speed.
you'll find most cars with steer assist tend to make some additional noise when the pump is being called on.... if the pump is faulty and eventually gives in, the worst that'll happen is being stubborn (heavy) to turn slow corners or while parking.

Most likely you have a bad drive axle, each drive axle has 2 universal joints and when they get worn they make a big clunk sound. Especially turning or going from forward to reverse.

After our suburu outback warms-up, there is a thumping noise from the front axles when I turn to the right or left. Our mechanic wants to change the transmission, but I am not sure that is the problem. He...

if its all wheel drive, you will have CV joints in the front. if the boots on the cv joints are damaged, torn ripped etc, then dust and debris will have entered into the cv joint and wreak all types of havoc on the bearing. To test, go into a parking lot and at slow speed....20km, 10 mi/hr turn sharp to one direction and listen to see if the noise becomes apparent = will be grinding or clunking. this is the result of the bearing wearing a groove in the cv bearing housing and when you turn sharply, the bearings do in and out of this groove, causing you to here a clunking sound. also, it should do this wether it is hot or cold = not temperature dependant

Clunking front hubs

usually the noise in the front end is the u-joints or cv joints out towards the tires.

When turning steering wheel - either way, clunking sound.

Sounds like you have a bad CV joint, this will make a clunking or clicking noise like you described only when turning, and varies with vehicle speed.

Have it repaired before it breaks and leaves you stranded, or damages anything else.

Trans clunking when slowing down

Sounds like youi may have a few serious problems going on to have that kind of back lash occuring at higher speeds. I have experiance with low spped clunks on Bronkos and your type of vech being a car dealer. One you might try for low speed clunk on take off and braking at stop likts just completeing a stop? Pull the drive shaft and lubricate the splin - two check your leaf springs for weakness and wore bushings - take a look at your shocks - three u bolts holding springs to rear axle housing may be letting the axle housing actually dip or tweak or all those thing in combination - now you may have some serious slop in the pig - transfer case may be causing that clunk - as far as high spped clunk and activity you have a serous problem and you just might drop the transferr case have an accident fliping over..............Mike South Bend Indiana don't just keep driving and making problem worst...........
