I have a "86" and the fuel filter is on top of the fuel tank. If you look in from the rear driver side tire you can see it.
I replaced the filter on the top of the fuel tank,it helped but didn't fix it. I found the main filter by following the fuel line forward to the engine. It was hidden from view on the drivers side near the cab at the end of the bed on/in the frame. A steel clip held the filter and a flashlight was needed just to see it though a small access hole. I used a needle nose plier to pull the fuel line out far enough to get the clamp off and out of the way. Then I pulled the old filter out though the access hole and got the other clamp off and made sure that line didn't fall back inside. I replaced the filter, making sure the lines were still good and the arrow pointed to the carburetor. I pushed it back up inside and even got the steel clip back on holding it. It wasn't easy but it didn't take that long.

starter motor is located on either the lower right hand (passenger) or
left hand (driver) side of the engine, bolted to the transmission
housing with two mounting bolts.
Removal and installation of the starter motor will require access from both the top and bottom of the engine compartment.

I'm not sure if your '87 is the same as my '88 or not, but mine is located just in front of the tank. I also have to remove the rear driver-side wheel to get at it.

In front of the fuel tank. You will likely have to remove the rear driver side wheel to get to it.
On mine it's in front of the rear drivers side wheel and it's tucked in there pretty high. There should be 2 lines going into the top of it.
