Ford tauus automatic transmission will not shift into drive or reverse after I shift it out of park

2002 ford taurus SE with no check engine light, was driving home and was sitting at the light and as a safty precauson i had the vehicle idling in neutral because I'v had many of a time accidently rear ended the car in front of mine when my foot just on the brake with it still in drive, so what happened is when the light turned green and I shifted the gear shifter into drive the transmission slightly kicked into gear hard then worked fine then after my 1st left turn then the 2nd right turn 1 after the next all of a sudden it seemed as though the motor had stalled in gear so stupid me I attempted to restart the car out of park then shifted it into park and tried to restart it again then realized the car was already still running shifted the gear shifter out of park and when I tried to drive it again it wouldn't move and I was forced to place it into neutral and push it to the side of the road now and still I can start the vehicle and shift it into and back out of park the auto trans just will not engage into either reverse or drive anymore

you need to have the shifting cable lubricated or replaced.

You sould have been moore frequent on your transmission fluid changes, and you shouldn't have taken it to Jiffy Lube either. Your best bet is to drain and fill the trans fluid run it shift gears. Drain and fill again. Do this 3 times. Yeah the transmission fluid is expensive. on the last drain and fill you want to get a bottle of LUBE GUARD from NAPA or who ever sells it. put the whole 10oz bottle in. Shift Rev, 1, 2, 3, D. Neutral Rev D. If that don't work then you have bad seals.

Sounds like a linkage/cable to me. Disconnect the linkage at the transmission and move the shift actuator by hand to see if there is the same things happening. Don't try to do this with the engine running unless someone is holding the brake inside the car.

The obd port under the steering wheel is the place to plugin. A code reader for a transmission cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. The site forscan,org has great scan software for a ford. It requires a elm327 usb to obd device to connect your car to a laptop. Elm327 devices can be purchased on ebay for under $20. Forscan might work for a transmission, I have used it on a ford ABS system.

02 ford Taurus se transmission will not shift into any other gear then neutral although it does start please let me know if I tanked the transmission but it is just some other simple fix and inexpensive...

If you are saying drive and reverse do not work, is the check engine light on ? You should have trouble codes stored if it is.
If park holds the car in place you know the driveshafts are connected. Just about any problem inside the transmission should set a code.

2000 grand prix 3100 tran. didn't whine or slip and fluid doen'st smell burnt. But the car won't move it is like it is in N. all the time.

could be a selector failure. easiest to check first or internall drama with torqu converter ,one way clutch or other. these will require r@r n overhaul
