Try replacing Oxygen sensor (top of exhaust pipe just rear of engine; 22mm ring-spanner job after cutting wires); though normally comes up with Code 1 on the MIL, this is the right bunch of symptoms.
Forget the Oxygen sensor - upon reflection check out the fuel smell; fuel is under very high pressure and the ECU will not like drops in pressure, or injectors getting air bubbles (hence the Oxygen sensor will detect incorrect mixture). If you smell gas, there is a significant leak from somewhere. Start with the fuel filter unions (rear LHS of engine bay - black, with two pipes on top), and work both ways, smelling as you go. Low fuel pressure or bad mixture willl produce rubbish performance and warning lights. Gas is dangerous too!
