SOURCE: no rotation of distributor

while it's possible the gear came off the end of the distributor, the most likely cause of this issue is a broken timing belt, which doesn't always cause engine damage. if you can, unbolt the distributor from the engine and just check to see that the keyway is still attached to it and spins it. if so, take it into the shop because you've got something internal going on, whether it's the timing belt, or a broken camshaft.

SOURCE: What problems arise with a faulty "Control Module"

If the Might Max has a 3.0 V6 then the distributor uses several small LED lights wthin it and a spinning disc with small holes in it as the disc spins the the light briefly passes thru the holes calling on the ECU to spark or injector pulse; I do no think this may be rebuilt. However given the year of the truck my money is on the ECU failing (the capacitors on early 90's mitsubishi will leak and fail) You can read the ECU by use of a small connector near it and using a standard analog volt meter.
Please let me know if I may assist further.

Tom

Why would the car act like it wants to die while driving

Hi Deneice, Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair!

Deneice, there are many things that can cause an engine to die while driving. (1) If you have the 2.5 liter engine they have a problem with the distributor itself going bad, I'm not sure what engine you have. (2) Fuel pump low pressure can cause dyeing while driving, you'll need to have the fuel pressure checked. Bad connection and wiring issues can cause the same thing, performing a wiggle test of all the wiring while the engine is running, CAUTION: While performing this test keep your hands away from the moving belts and parts. If you wiggle all the wiring and the engine dies while wiggling in a certain area, then you may have found a frayed wire touching metal or a bad connector. Hope this helps and if you should find the time please visit my auto repair website Here: http://www.bigasautorepair.com/

Magnet shavings inside distributor cap

. No they are not . It indicates that the distributor shaft is either bent or loose on the drive shaft. allowing the rotor button to touch the pins in the cap. It may also indicate that the mechanical advance is failing.

your feeling what Nissan refers to as limp mode (also known as fail safe ) Nissan computer strategy is when its detects a computer sensor (that could cause engine damage)has failed,or your engine for any other reason is running in a way that could cause severe engine damage is to make your engine run at limited rpm until the concern is repaired,I would assume your check engine light must be on, if not the bulb in the dash may be bad, anyways the best route is to have the engine control module scan for trouble codes which will get you headed in the right direction.

take off one of the plug wires and hold it next to a metal surface, get someone to turn the engine over for you and see if the spark is bright blue, if it is the coils are ok, then check for oil leaking around your distributor, if you have an oil around that area take off the distributor cap and see if there is oil inside. the seal may be gone, while you have the cap off it would be a good time to check the rotor button inside

95' mustang no fire

This also happened to my '95 mustang 5.0L I was actually driving when it lost power. Take the cap off of the distributor and see if the shaft wiggles. The distributor shaft in the mustangs are the weakest point of the engine. If the shaft wobbles the rotor will wobble hitting the points and may break the rotor. All the metal grinding will put little metal shavings in the housing where the magnetic pick-up will attract them, this is the problem. You can replace the magnetic pick-up but if the shaft is moving around you will need a new distributor all around.

My 2002 dodge ram van cranks/ won't fire

The coil is inside the distributor cap. It is a flat round plastic plate the cap pushes downn on when you put it on, with wires going to it. Disconnect the wire connector, remove the distributor cap, remove the rotor, pull up on the wires till the coil/plate pops off the distributor housing. Replace with new coil, reverse procedure to assemble it all.
Be careful to clean inside the distributor when you have the coil out, as it does not come apart often, and sand and dirt builds up under the shield/plate of the coil, especially in dusty areas, so blow it and wipe it out good. Put the new coil in. Put the rotor on, then the cap.
Replace all this stuff if you have trouble with the coil.
Also, replace spark plugs or clean them, as misfires and mis timed spark can cause one or more plugs to really carbon up fast and bad.
