If your not overheating or losing coolant, its more than likely engine oil burning. If it is coolant related, possible blown head gasket.

SOURCE: Rough idle until warm 22r

if it is a carburated engine it is probably the a.a.p. diaphragm in the carb. if you remove the air cleaner and look on the side of the carb that is towards the valve cover near the front yow will see a vacuum hose going to a cover that is fastened with 3 screws. if you pull the vacuum line off you will see that there is probably fuel being sucked into the line due to the leaking diaphragm. the vacuum source is temp controlled and cuts off when warm. but when cold sucks fuel directly into the intake. remove the 3 screws to replace the diaphragm, being carefull of the spring. good luck!

SOURCE: 1994 Toyota Truck 22R Engine

Saw your post on another thread. I have the same truck. The fuel filter is located on the rail just below the passenger door. Its an easy one to remove,...couple bolts, but access to it is a pain.

How to fix a timing chain rattle on a 85-94 Toyota 22R engine

Toyota 22R 1985-94 85- Celica, P.U., Four runner.

There are two basic different 20-21-22r engines, and three different timing chain setups. The early tall block 20-22r block used a dual row chain with steel backed rubber faced guides, the 83-84 22r used a single row chain with plastic guides and short step bolts, then came the final setup, a shorter block, thinner head, combustion chamber with a large squish area, nearly flat pistons, and pear shaped exhaust ports. It has a single row chain, with plastic guides with long step bolts on the left (drivers side) and short step bolts on the right holding the guides on. On this last 22R there is high incidence of guide failure, usually starting with the long straighter left guide breaking, allowing the chain to rattle against the timing cover in the area where the coolant passes through to the water pump, eventually wearing through and letting coolant into the crankcase. Upon inspection we find the chain is loose when installed, the tensioner is close to half way out on a new engine.

If we use a right side, curved guide and
short step bolts from an 83-84 and a prestretched timing chain, it goes together tight, the tensioner is fully retracted making the whole setup have less play, and less chance to rattle and break the left guide. I've never seen this setup fail, oil leaks from using sealant around the oil ports on the right side have been tough, but using the factory gasket on this side seems to work, also the felpro with printed seal in this area seem to work well.

This is critical if the block and head have been surfaced, making the chain even looser.

Hope this helps

1990 Corolla started shaking after I accelerated rapidly (gunned the engine)

White smoke coming out of exhaust is water vapor. Blue is oil burning and black is carbon from unburned fuel.
U have water or coolant leaking into your combustion cylinders - not a good thing. Probably blown head gasket.

Check your oil - if it like a brown mud then the coolant has also gotten into the lubrication system.

I have already checked the heater core........that is not it. Could it be ingesting water through the part under the throttle valve that has two small water lines running in and out of it?

is the motor the 3VZE, if so replace the head gaskets, even on the 22R motor, it sounds like it is about time to replace the head gaskets, usually about every 100,000 miles it is time to replace the head gaskets, is the coolant getting into the cylinders and burning and white smoke that smells like antifreeze coming out of the exhaust?

White smoke coming out of the exhaust when starting the engine?

Its the problem of oil.The oil is getting burned out. The vehicle is either burning oil or it is moisture in the gas chamber if you notice white smoke from the exhaust. This is a common possibility.but in some cases this white smoke is not due to oil burning. In that case   White smoke from the exhaust is a symptom of coolant entering the combustion chamber. Normally this is a sign of a blown head gasket or cracked head. And  this is not a common problem must be repaired immediately. You must STOP driving this vehicle or you will cause serious engine damage. you will have to get both this possibilities checked.
Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Water coming out of the exhaust of my 93 Toyota Tercel

It could be moisture in exhaust but if a white smoke is there check oil when drained to see if water is present. The oil shold be a light brown milky look.

Water in oil

I have yet to see a cracked head on a 22R,so more than likely a blown head gasket, unless you overheated and warped the head and worst case a hole between the cylinder wall and water jacket(this is pretty rare). The only way to tell short of using some expensive tools or taking to your local shop is to pull the head and inspect the gasket for leakage wich is generally fairly obvious(separation of the gasket layers, oil and water between water and oil passages)and checking the head deck for warpage. If there is obvious leakage in the gasket you're looking at a top end gasket set if the head is slightly warped you can get away with a thick graphite head gasket,I personally use these as they are very forgiving on slightly warped and scratched head decks and inepensive also, but a severly warped head will require milling at a machine shop or replacement.
