Fuel filter bad, won't start?

Hi, my Volvo 940 usually won't start without starting fluid, when I use that it will turn over and I'll have to hold the throttle down a bit for it to stay on. My father said it's probably the fuel filter that's causing it not to start. Also the battery was replaced about a month ago, and will sometimes lose charge and not crank at all, and require a jump. It's one of the cheaper batteries as it's all I could afford at that time. Does this sound like a bad fuel filter, injector, pump, relay, whatever? Sorry I'm not completely car savvy so idk what all the part terms are/do.

Hi Zac first thing i would check is fuel pressure. remove fuel hose to fuel rail hold hose into container get some one to crank motor only for a few seconds and turn ignition off..if no fuel ! suspect; fuel pump . also listen for fuel pump to hum when turning ignition on it should make some noise! hope this gives you something to check. as a mechanic i have come across this as a problem before.

Testimonial: "Thank you , I do hear the fuel pump hum when the ignition is on. I'll have to check the hose tomorrow when there's sunlight, will post an update then."

Volvo 940 does not starts. Starter works and turns, battery has charge. Changed a fuel pump, it helped for couple weeks. Then same thing happened. Cleaned fuel relay. It also helped for couple days but...

check your pump if you replaced the pre pump in your fuel tank you must check the seal .remove the plastic ring check the base at the entry to your pump is flat .it may be leaking air due to your seal not seated in correctly.

Turns over but won't fire

If a starter is able to crank the engine but it won't start you usually have either an electrical or fuel problem. It's also remotely possibly that it's compression. If an engine has proper fuel, spark and compression, it will start when you crank it. So your challange is to find out which part isn't working right. Start with fuel. Spray a little starting fluid into the air intake while someone tries to start the engine. If it starts briefly when you're spraying starting fluid, you probably have a fuel delivery problem. That could be injectors, fuel pump, fuel filter, relay, fuse... who knows what until you check into it.If it doesn't start with starting fluid, check the spark. Pull a plug wire and attach it to a spare sparkplug and set the plug on a solid metal part of the engine. Have a helper crank the engine while you watch the plug. If you have a good spark, it might just be out of timing. In any case, you'll need to start isolating the problem. Find out which part isn't working then you'll know what to replace/repair.

New fuel pump but still won't start electrical power only primes for half second and power goes off won't start starts with starting fluid

hi there
without physically looking at this it is hard to say but best thing i can suggest is that the fuel relay is bad this is a fuse located usually under the hood and will be marked on diagram
hope this helps have a great day

Car has been sitting; will turn over but won't start. Used starting fluid and car starts but quits. Won't fire without starting fluid. There is fuel in the tank. Help!!

My first thought is to check the fuel pump operation.
Check to see if fuel pump is getting power.

This is how I check the pump.

Usually there is an in-line fuel filter that can be removed.
While its removed...bump the starter to see if gas shoots out the gas line.
If not, there might be a clog at the pump...or the pump needs replacing.

Hope this helps...

1994 Volvo 940 died while driving (had only driven a mile). Had full gas tank, fluids checked and are good, timing chain good, all belts seem good. When try to start goes "rrr rrr" like it wants to start...

Inspect your fuel line and see if it's supplying the fuel, if not then you need to check if fuel pump is working or not. if not change the fuel pump and fuel filter. Good Luck

CAR SOMETIMES WONT START

you are having a fuel delivery problem...and it could be caused by numerous things...such as a bad fuel pump, a bad cold sensor or warm up injector.  You haven't attempted to  solve any of these suspected faults...so take it to a mechanic for repair
