SOURCE: possible cracked manifold

Take it to a muffler shop, they work on exhaust problems all the time and may just need a new gasket from the collector flange which would not be that expansive. Almost all of them will inspect for free since there looking for your business.
I have not sean exhaust manifold go bad before the whole car or truck and the exhaust pipe is stainless so good chances are that it's the flange gasket or the bolts may have broke due to time and vibration.
Good luck and keep me posted.

SOURCE: o2 sensor location 1997 pontiac grand am 2.4 4 cyl auto trans

BANK 1 SENSOR 1 IS THE ONE IN THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. BANK 2 SENSOR 2 IS BELOW THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER.

P0171 SHOULD GO AWAY WITH A GOOD O2 SENSOR BUT DO CHECK FOR VACUUM LEAKS TO BE SURE. 3.1/3.4L ENGINES HAVE A BAD DESIGN INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET, THE LEAK OIL, COOLANT, AND AIR.

SOURCE: exhaust manifold

A cracked exhaust manifold should not effect your motor unless you have an exhaust driven turbo or something depending on exhaust back pressure to be there. I know where I live you can not get a vehicle with exhaust leaks infront of the passengers compartment inspected though so you may want to have the leak fixed for passenger safety.

Cracked exhaust manifold. with engine off, on a cool motor, put a shop vac in reverse up the tail pipe. this low pressure will show any leaks in the exhaust. Use soap and water to spray the exhaust manifold. Any crack will draw air and cause the engine to run lean

Where is the oil filter on 2004 pontiac grand am?

Oil filter on the 3.1 liter engine on the 2004 Grand Am is located on the engine, just below the exhaust manifold on the radiator side. To remove it, your going to have to jack the front up off the ground to give you room to get to it. Once your under the car, you'll see the oil filter just under the exhaust manifold attached to the engine block.

Thank you for using fixya and be safe.

I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix gtp with supercharger. I have oil in coolant reservoir, I am not getting the white steam from exhaust pipes. car runs fine. not overheating. I checked the oil dipstick and...

The reason for this is because your trans cooler(which is built into the radiator itself) has failed and burst causing trans fluid to contaminate the cooling system. The fix for this is to remove and replace the radiator with a new one and then flush your cooling system to remove all trans fluid.I hope I could help!!! Any other questions please get back to me and rate me accordingly.

Where is the thermostat located on a 2003 grand am gt 3.4 V6

The thermostat is located just under the exhaust manifold you will see that a metal pipe leads from the water pump to where the thermostat housing is. You must to remove two screws from where this pipe meets the housing and it is a pain to do unless you remove the exhaust manifold or have small hands.
