There are 2 speed sensors on your vehicle, an input speed sensor and an output speed sensor. Below is a pic showing the front of your transmission. The input sensor is closest to the engine. Both sensors look the same.
very helpful, but is there a way to test the speed sensors without removal
Not really without a DRB scanner. The sensors actually create a magnetic pulse as the componenet spins inside. The faster the componenet spins, the closer togather the pulses are. The computer then translates that pulse into how fast the shaft is rotating. The good thing is that if you have a single bad sensor and buy one sensor, it will work for both positions. You can replace the input speed sensor and see if the problem goes away. If not, simply put the new sensor into the output speed sensor position and re-install the input speed sensor that you had remove earlier. Most of the time it is the input speed sensor that fails.
That diagram is totally NO for a Chrysler 2009 Town & Country!

I just replaced 2 transmission sensors and they are different . One is straight line black and the other faces upward for the connection. unfortunately it made things worse and my 09 Chrysler T & W 3.8 is in limp mode. I was told it was a 6 speed and only had 1 sensor but found 2. So did Chrysler put the wrong Transmission in my van ? How do I fix this myself. i am poor and disabled with kids! Plz advise? The input and output speed sensors look identical on the connector side. The one over the solenoid pack is the input, the one closer to the left frame rail or left front wheel is the output sensor. I hope this helps.

SOURCE: location of the speed sensor on 1996 town & country
they are on the front drivers side of the transmisson and have two wires coming off them, there are two one is an input shaft sensor and the other is an output shaft sensor unless you have a 4 cyl van then there is only one sensor please rate -jeff

It should show the diagram on the radiator top panel...or up on the hood. If not, go to the library and look it up in a manual.
