SOURCE: Ned to change the oil in transfer case

The Z71 typically comes with the auto 4wd transfer case (cannot remember the GM number). This requires AutoTrak II, which is available at a GM dealer. Do not use any other fluid in this transfer case! The previous post was correct in the location of the two plugs, but not on the fluid (the other types of transfer cases by GM use ATF). The transfer case is located under the truck right under the cab. There is a small skid plate under it, and a large driveshaft leaves the rear end of the case heading to the rear differential (axle). If you have the manual or electronic w/o auto 4WD transfer case, you can use Dexron III, but Dexron VI is a better fluid that is also now available at your local auto parts store. Again, if you have the AUTO 4WD button in the dash, use the AutoTrak II fluid from the dealer.

SOURCE: what type of fluid goes in the transfer case on a

The correct fluid for your transfer is dextron/mercon transmission fluid. To check the fluid level, jack up both ends of the vehicle and be sure to support with jack stands.Make sure vehicle is level. If you look at the rear of the transfer case, you will see two plugs, one lower than the other.Remove the lower plug and if fluid runs out it was overfilled,if nothing runs out, stick your pinky finger in the hole and feel for the fluid level. If it needs fluid, remove upper plug and pour in fluid until it runs out the bottom hole. Then replace plugs and lower vehicle

SOURCE: 2002 GMC envoy SLT 4x4, tccm, switch problem

About 45% of all transmission problems are due to a defective battery, its components and the charging system. Make sure you have the correct battery in the vehicle and inspect all items relating to the charging system and the battery. The vehicle should charge between 13,5 to 14.5 volts. The condition of the belts is part of this inspection. If all of this is A-ok then get a scanner and pull the codes in the PCM.
Remember once light is illuminated for a item that item no longer works. Once you've gotton to this point let me know and I'll walk you threw it. Hopefully its just a weak or incorrect battery or something along those lines. Good luck and keep me posted

My 2004 gmc envoy has service 4wd light on when I tried to put it in 4wd. I was told that it might need fluid in the transfer case came on til I tried it for the first time this year,

the transfer case is just behind the transmission and not the differentials check fluid in that and see how low it is, there will be 2 plugs pull the top one usually just a 3/8 ratchet and extension and stick pinky finger in to see if there is fluid if low fill till it starts to come out the hole and put plug back in then check to see if light is still on

Transfer case leaking

The transfer case is independently sealed and does not share the same fluid that is inside the transmission. It can only leak from the breather (if the fluid is in failure or was over filled), from the front or rear seal, or from the case (either the case is cracked or where the case bolts together, the sealant has failed). I hope that helps. If I can be of anymore help please let me know.

When I switch my 2002 envoy into 4wd it does not engage and 4wd service light comes on? How can I fix this problem as it worked fine before

This problem could be the Transfer Case actuator/motor or the spline disconnect assembly at the front differential, or a bad Transfer Case Control Module. The other important maintenance action that needs to happen every 50K miles is the transfer case fluid needs to be changed.
Repair of these item is probably not for a unintiated DIY'r.

I have a 2003 Envoy and 4 lo works but 4 hi and awd doesn't?!?!?

It's a good possibility that some of the clutches in the transfer case are shot. When was the last time the transfer case fluid was changed? It needs to be changed every 50K miles using GM AutoTrak II fluid.

2002 envoy trans problem--second 1 thats burned out the trans and transfere case has th same fluid in it

The two units do not share or mix fluids. The transmission needs automatic transmission fluid and the transfer case uses ONLY Auto-Trak II fluid (only available at GM dealer). Do not put any other fluid in either.

2002 envoy trans burned out second 1 just melted

Transfer case fluid is different from the trans fluid, transfer case takes a Blue fluid made by G.M. can't think of the name of it, and trans takes Dex III or IIII read manual, if it is getting to transfer case then you deal between the trans and transfer case is bad causing it to **** the fluid out of trans, need to change the seals this time. Car Quest sells a 1 piece seal that seals both units instead of 2 different seals. Good Luck

Noisy transfer case on 2005 gmcenvoy

When was the last time the transfer case fluid was changed? This service needs to be done every 50,000 miles. If it is making noise, it may be too late already. The only fluid to be used is GM AutoTrak II, you can get it at any GM dealer.

I have a 2004 GMC Envoy XL and the high range 4x4 mode will not engage. The AWD system works just fine as well as the 4x4 mode in low gear. What is causing this?

Is the Service 4WD light coming on? Do the light on the 4x4 selector switch indicate the proper selection and are on steady after a few seconds? If there is no Service 4WD light on and the selector switch light are correct, the only place for the problem to be is the Transfer Case. Has the Transfer Case fluid been changed at 50K mile intervals? This is very important.
