How to Tell if You Have a Faulty Coil Pac How a Coil Pack Works When creating a spark at the spark plug, the fire must initiate from a high voltage supply, so as much fuel as possible burns in the cylinder. Whenever the combustion process is started, the coil pack builds up the energy, as much as 50,000 to 75,000 Volts. When the electronic control module (the car computer) sends the signal to the ignition control, the voltage is released from the coil pack through the spark plug cables to the spark plug.

You need to use ohm meter to test the coil pack for continuity. Make sure you have the approximate ohm values for the coil pack. To find this information, research your car's engine on the Internet or purchase a Chilton's or Haynes manual to find out what the mega ohms reading on the coil pack should be. What Coil Pack Works with a Rotary Engine? Most rotary engines require a different type of ignition coil pack.   When ordering a coil pack for your rotary engine equipped car, you need to know the year and model as well as the engine displacement to ensure you are given the correct parts.

Easiest way is if you have another working coil pack and switch it out with the suspected faulty coil pack. Say you have a problem that is with the coil pack that covers the 1-3 switch it with the one that covers 2-4. If the problem does not switch to where you put the faulty coil pack... it's not the coil pack. Replacement coil packs can be found at an auto part store or if you need a cheap replacement you can usually find one at a junkyard.

I don't understand why you would replace the coil if you are not getting power to it.
The coil is powered by the ASD relay. Have you replaced the relay ?

Check engine light on ? Code's ? What engine ? 2.3 l 4cylinder or 3.ol v-6 This vehicle has coil on plug ignition system , not coil packs ! a coil per cylinder . If new coils an still has no spark , has no B+ voltage to the coil or the PCM isn't controlling them . Without testing i'd only be guessing as to the problem .If the repair shop you had it to can only say it had to be the coils , I'd find another shop to take it to !

Have you replaced the spark plug leads? If not I would renew them

Buick Park Avenue has Type I coil packs, three twin tower ignition coils are combined into a single coil pack unit, and Type II coil packs, the coils can be replaced separately and the ignition wires are all on the same side of the coil pack.



What is yours?

Check the crank shaft postioning sensor. If you are getting power to the coil pack and there is no power coming out of the coil pack the coil pack might be bad or have corrioson between the coil pack and the mount. Thanks

was the coil replaced it located under the van follow line put some fluid in and start engine you willl see the leak . hope this wuill help

You shouldn't have to remove it....here are the steps from the tech manual:

Removal & Installation

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
   
2. Label and disconnect the spark plug wires from each of the coil pack towers.
   

Ignition coil removal—2.4L engine


Ignition coil removal—3.3L and 3.8L engines

1. Disengage the electrical connector from the ignition coil pack.
   
2. Remove the coil pack mounting fasteners.
   
3. Remove the coil pack from the vehicle. If equipped, remove the coil pack from the mounting bracket.
   

To install:

1. Place the coil pack into position on top of the engine valve cover, or mounting bracket, if equipped.
   
2. Install and tighten the coil pack mounting fasteners to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
   
3. Plug in the electrical connector to the ignition coil pack.
   
4. Connect each spark plug wire to each corresponding coil pack tower. The coil pack towers are numbered with the correct cylinder identification. Be sure that the spark plug wires snap firmly onto each coil tower.
   
5. Connect the negative battery cable.
