Does my Mustang have a low gear?

I have a 1966 Mustang Coupe with a 289, V8 automatic engine. It has a C4 transmission. The car only has Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive. I need to know if this car only has a Drive gear or is it suppose to have a low gear as well. The car does not up shift while driving and the highest that I take the car is 30mph. Can anyone help me?

The C4 automatic transmission is a 3 speed transmission, it shifts by hydraulic pressure controlled by a governor and actuators, I would check your linkage to see that it is hooked up correctly to allow movement through all range selections, disconnect the linkage at the trans and see how many detents you feel while moving the lever back and forth, make sure to chock your vehicle as moving the lever from Park may cause the car to move. Let me know what you find, hope this helps

What does it mean that my 66 pony has a green dot trany?

the '65/'66 C4, was known as the "Green Dot" C4 & has a different shift pattern to the '67/later C4's.

So your C4 tranny is the green dot which is an UPGRADED option. A better tranny better gears and stronger parts and what not, there was also the white dot tranny that was the cheaper or less performance transmission. As far as i understand the white dot was available for better fuel consumption HAHAHA which no one really cared about in 66 anyways.

In '65/'66 it was something like this:
P - Park
R - Reverse
N - Nuetral
White Dot - Starts in 2nd, automatically shifts to 3rd
Green Dot - Starts in 1st, automatically shifts to 2nd and 3rd

Removing selector from c4 transmission

You have to drop the pan and inside is a bolt and roll pin that hold the selector rod in. You have to remove it and the rod will slide right out so you can replace the seal.

66 Mustang- 289 V8- has an intermittent surge and rattling noise

Sounds like crappy gas. The 289 may not like pump no-lead and the rattling sound you are hearing may be pinging / knocking.
