Check fuel filter in gas tank. I had an old Ford Pinto wagon that had 2 filters on it. One in the tank (it was a nylon bag over the tube into tank) and one at the carb. Anyway, the one in the tank finally after 80K, let me drive the car very slow or it would **** shut when i tried to accelerate. It was all gummed up from being directly in the tank. I discovered this as another person had the same problem. I say this as the fuel filter for the opitma is in the tank!

Check for vacuum leak in engine area. It will make a hissing noise. Need to do this while engine is running. Leaks are most common do to a disconnected or cracked vacuum line.
