It could be a couple things? Is the battery light on? High RPM's at idle speed? Does it happen under an increased load (uphill)? Does it happen on flat surfaces? Check engine light on?

SOURCE: 2005 kia optima stalling and not wanting to go

Check fuel filter in gas tank. I had an old Ford Pinto wagon that had 2 filters on it. One in the tank (it was a nylon bag over the tube into tank) and one at the carb. Anyway, the one in the tank finally after 80K, let me drive the car very slow or it would **** shut when i tried to accelerate. It was all gummed up from being directly in the tank. I discovered this as another person had the same problem. I say this as the fuel filter for the opitma is in the tank!

Check for vacuum leak in engine area. It will make a hissing noise. Need to do this while engine is running. Leaks are most common do to a disconnected or cracked vacuum line.

Check the condition of the trans fluid. If it is black the trans is proably worn out. You could take it to a kia dealership and ask them to reset the adaptives on your transmission.

2005 optima ckankshaft sensor

2005 optima cranksensor if you are a 2.4 the CKP sensor is located at front of crankshaft, behind the timing belt cover. If your engine is running rough or stalling try shaking the sensor connector to see if it affects engine operation. Inspect the male to female terminal for proper fit. If you are a 2.7 the CKP sensor is mounted on left side of engine block, near the fly wheel. For either engine size if you are cranking the engine and your tach reads zero, you are dealing with a failed CKP.

My 2005 Kia Optima will run after sitting a while but sometimes it will just shutdown with no notice at all. It started to hesitate a little about a month ago

SOUNDS LIKE THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR . HAD SOME TROUBLE WITH THEM ON THE 4 CYLINDERS VEHICLE STALLS AFTER DRIVING AWHILE LET IT SIT AND WILL RESTART WILL ALSO THROW A CODE IN THE ECM FOR THIS . WHEN IT DOESNT START CHECK AND SEE IF YOU HAVE SPARK. IF THE ECM DOES NOT SEE THE CRANK SENSOR YOU WILL HAVE NO INJECTOR PULSE AND NO SPARK
