Car cranks but doesnt turn over. radiator keeps needing more water but its not leaking. gas isnt getting to the engine

Gas doesnt always seem to be getting to the engine. radiator keeps needing water, and coolant resevior always goes dry but no leaks under car. its hit or miss, sometimes it turns over and starts other times i have to crank it about three different times then it runs, sometimes wont start at all. its due for an iol change but i cant imagine that being the reason for all these issues. please help!

Could be the head gasket has gone take out spark plugs and check there condition and look for water in the piston, water and fuel dont burn well. as you have done an oil change it may have gotten into the oil but its harder to tell with new oil, as water will sit on the top of the oil.

SOURCE: Coolant leak and starting problem

I had the same problem on a 2002 CRV with 105,000 miles. The radiator leaks from a seam near the bottom, and drips into a tray, and most evaporates before you can notice it.

The Honda dealer had NO radiator hoses in stock, but had 175 radiators, which tells me that it is a very common problem- part. Their cost $ 405 + tax (part only).

Installed new one from NAPA for $165. It took about 2.5 hours.

SOURCE: I have water leaking from

Hi it has the classic symptoms of a failed water pump, when stationary no water/coolant is running around the engine hence cold air, when driving its forcing the water/coolant around the engine giving the warm air,, solution have the water pump changed before the head gasket blows, Hope this helps

Good Morning,
Check for moisture in the Distributor and use a blow dryer to dry it out. You may want to consider changing your Spark Plug wires to a "Moisture Resistant" type. Please let me know if this helps you and thank you for using FixYa!

Car Over Heating!! Simple Temporary FIX to get you home.

We ,, well most of us have had our cars over heat at times, and sometimes in places that we wish id didnt happen. I will detail a few tricks here to get you on your way or back home safely.

Why do cars over heat?

Simply because it gets too hot!!, There are several reasons for this ,
1.) radiator has no water
2.) radiator is leaking
3.) Thermostat isnt working
4.) Fan isnt working

If your radiator has no water then u have to shut the car off. Use cool water and pour over the radiator cover until it gets cool to your touch (NEVER OPEN A HOT RADIATOR, PRESSURE BUILDS WITH THE HOT WATER AND IT WILL EXPLODE OUT AND BURN YOU). when its cold enough for you to touch, use a damp cloth to open the radiator cap, keeping your face clear of it, Start your engine, and add water to the radiator. (Dont Add Water To a hot engine without starting it)

If your radiator is leaking then allow it to cool a bit and follow the above instructions to get it opened. Crack an egg (whole egg without shell) in the radiator before adding water. (keep engine running) the egg solidifies in the hole and plugs it enough to get you home. If you plan to repair the radiator, u must flush it out first to get rid of the egg and other contents before welding.

The thermostat!!
If this isnt working propperly the fan wont turn on, follow the instructions for the fan below.

Fan aint working
Look closely at the fan you will find you will see a tube of 2 / 3 wires connecting to its motor. it connects there via a clip. unclip it. there will be 2 wires sometimes 3 . One of them is a positive (blue, brown, red) and the other is a ground (black or black stripe) cut them , use extra wires and connect them to the positive and negative of your battery terminals. The ground can also be placed on the body of the vehicle.Remember to disconnect these wires when you get home or it will drain your battery.

There you have it. A few simple to help get you home safely in the event your vehicle overheats.

IT KEEPS OVERHEATING

REPLACE THE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.IF COOLANT LOW, ADD MORE COOLANT THROUGH COOLANT OVERFLOW UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL IN THE COOLANT OVERFLOW STAY AT FULL COLD MARK.REASON POUR COOLANT THROUGH COOLANT OVERFLOW MOST GM CARS DONT HAVE RADIATOR CAP.WHEN YOU GET COOLANT LEVEL OKAY, CRANK CAR LET IT IDLE UNTIL ENGINE GET HOT BUILD UP PRESSURE THEN TURN OFF CAR.CHECK FOR COOLANTS LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR HOSES,CHECK FOR LEAKS AT THE RADIATOR, CHECK FOR LEAKS AT WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE IF YOU SEE COOLANT LEAKING FROM WEEP HOLE REPLACE WATER PUMP. IF CAR OVERHEATING WHILE IDLING YOUR COOLING FANS NOT WORKING CHECK COOLING FANS FUSE AND RELAYS.IF FUSE AND RELAYS OKAY THE ENGINECOOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR BAD.

Hi, If you see white smoke coming from tail pipe then you will know it is leaking through engine.
I would suggest after you replace head gasket, that you put new radiator fluid (50/50) mix and a new thermostat in. The fluid will keep it from boiling over. Good luck.

Why my oldsmobile alero 1999 wont keep water in

CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAKS AROUND THE RADIATOR LOOK DOWN BETWEEN COOLING FANS AND RADIATOR SIDES FOR SIGNS OF ANTIFREEZE.CHECK ALL RADIATORS HOSES AND HEATER HOSES.IF ALL LOOK GOOD CHECK ENGINE OIL FOR COOLANT LEAKS.IF OIL LOOKS LIKE MILK SHAKE COOLANT LEAKING IN CRANK CASE.YOU HAVE A HEAD GASKET LEAK.YOU NEED TO CHANGE OIL + FILTER. GET THE HEAD GASKET FIX.BECAUSE LEAK IN THE CRANK CASE WILL LOCK UP THE ENGINE.IF CRANK CASE OIL LOOKS OKAY.YOU DONT HAVE THE COOLANT CORRECT MIXTURE.YOU SHOULD HAVE 50/50 ANTIFREEZE AND WATER.

Our 1991 honda civic overheated we pulled over immeditely andwhile sitting everything went off now the it won't start or nothing now there was water on the battery

Wait for the car to cool off. Check for : 1. Fuel- does it have gas? 2. Spark- Is it getting good spark(electrical functioning-battery, starter, timing, etc.) 3. Compression- If the valves are toast the piston will not compress the air/fuel mixture for the spark to ignite it. No explosion, no start. Try to start it. Is there power in the vehicle? Does the engine turn over? If the engine turns over, does it have fuel? If it doesnt crank and the battery is fully charged then try jumping the starter solenoid, if it doesnt turn the engine then you must check to see if the engine is turning freely or seized by turning the crank with a breaker bar and socket. Is the engine turns then you should be able to troubleshoot it, if it doesn't then something is not letting it turn either in the head(s) or in the crank and that equals to pretty expensive repair costs. IF you get it to start, shut it off immediately and find the source of the overheating before going any further. Check coolant level(make sure the car has had enough time to cool down), check water hoses for leaks or cracks, check for a stuck thermostat or a clogged radiator.

if it isnt leaking on the ground, it's going into the engine , white white smoke from the tailpipe is definately a blown head gasket. do a pressure test on the radiator, if the pressure goes down, with no leaks on the ground, its a head gasket
