The other day I used my explorer in 4 wheel low and now it will not disengage. The indicator light, regardless of the position of the switch stays lit in 4 wheel low. The wheels stay engaged in 4 wheel low and will not disengage to 2 wheel or 4 wheel high when switch is positioned to either one.
The Explorer, at least the 1994-98 model requires you to shift out of 4x4 and drive in reverse for about 15 feet...it does stick from time to time. If it does not work the first time, just do it again....cheers..
Put it in neutral then try to shift it out of 4 wd low.
Swithc it to 2wd drive and put it in reverse,it might come out of 4wd that way

Go to the engine compartment where the relays are located with the fuses. Check or replace the 4 wheel auto engage relay , maybe is not working. Is very clearly mark, I believe is the top right one looking at the bost front front of vehicle to the back. There is a diagram drawing of each relay in the cover, so you can't go wrong.

Then put in gear..
What do you see now?
Do the same in reverse when you take out of 4X4

Me and a couple guys at work had the same problem. My brother who is a ford mech said it is a vacuum solenoid that is located on the passenger side fire wall. It should have 2 vacuum tubes and a small wire harness connected to it. On mine I turned 4wd on and nothing happened. I unhooked the solenoid and it engaged then I hooked it up and unhooked to and it was able to disengage. They only sell these soleiods at the dealers though for about $40. Ive looked all over the net and found nothing. But check those first cause if its no them then its either the hubs not disengaging or solenoid that engages the transfer case. Hope this helped.

I had same problem on my 2002 explorer. Its either the computer module, or the electric solenoid on the transfer case. In my case it was both. The computer module I had done twice in 14 months.
