1997 Saab 900S Ignition Switch Staying Engaged

The ignition switch on my 1997 Saab 900S convertable, 2.3 engine, is getting stuck engaging the starter. Basically the key has to be backed off manually to disengage the starter. I imagine there is a spring or something in the ignition which no longer works. Could you please enlighten me on the details of the ignition switch, thoughts, probable parts, schematic, and maybe how to repair it myself. Thanks.

The switch needs to be replaced and it requires some special tools if it's in the steering column. If it's on the floor any shade tree mechanic can do it.

I know it's an old post, but I just had this same thing happen on my 97 Saab 900SE and am surfing for answers. Sgt Fluffy doesn't even know where this ignition switch is so probably can't be trusted with how to fix it. Anyone else know?

My 1997 Chevy suburban k1500 5.7L keeps blowing the 20-A ENG 1 fuse

I had this same problem with a 1997 Z71 K1500. That fuse was receiving power from the ignition switch in my truck. After putting 4 ignitions in it in 6 months, I finally figured out that every time I put the transfer case in 4Low, the service engine light would come on & the ignition switch would go bad soon after. The electric motor that engaged transfer case was bad. Every time I engaged 4 Low, It would throw power surge to ignition & blow it up.

Replacing ignition switch on Saab 1996 900s 2.3 I 5 speed

You take all the center console and plastic ducts from between the seats. There are 4 10mm bolts holding the shifter mechanism to the floor. Take these off and do your best to flip the whole housing to where you can access the bottom side. The ignition switch is attached under there. As I recall there are 2 T20 screws holding it on.
