When I was going down the interstate my jeep jerked and then started trying to cut out on me. I pulled it over on the shoulder of the interstate and checked the belts and fluids and everything looked okay. When I tried to put it in gear it would not go in drive or reverse the motor would just rev up.

Ratio codes generally indicate a pressure loss & slipping which the computer reads as a gear ratio problem. Likely you need a rebuild.

I will bet it grinds when you try to engage first or reverse. When this happened on my car, I adjusted the clutch and it improved. You need about a half inch of free play when you first touch the pedal with your foot. If you have a slave cylinder, (hydraulic clutch). You may need to bleed the system. With air in the system, you can't get enough clutch to fully disengage the trans from the motor.(Clutch and pressure plate) It's like you only pushed down half way on the pedal. If it's not hydraulic, it should be adjusted with wrenches. If clutch is fine, It could be a loose shift linkage. It would seem extra sloppy when moving shifter, It would just not go in gear, with out the grinding.Hope this helps. lbreen

This could be an issue with the shift solenoid , but can also be caused by low fluid due to a leak, check your fluid. Is there a check engine light on, if there is it could be a solenoid issue.

Hi,
With the engine running in neutral, punch it and see if it bogs down. If it it does and all you hear is the carb gasping (for lack of better word) it may be a slight timing issue. Here are a few ideas to try:
Check vacuum advance at the distributor to see if vacuum.
Is the ignition electronic or manual distribution?
If manual:
File points/check point gap (You could also replace the points and condenser).
Either ignition:
Put a timing light to the engine is slightly out of time and adjust.
Hope this helps... Good luck fellow CJ5 Jeepster!

if this is a 5 speed manual transmission...all you need to do before putting your jeep into reverese is puting it into first gear and then shifting it to reverse to avoid any grinding or problems shifting into reverse...this isn't a problem just a poor jeep design by not installing an extra gear to eliminate this grinding or shifting problem
