Prizm overheats, heater core leaks, no heat

Just picked up a Prism that overheats. It is also leaking a little coolant into the passenger compartment, under the dash (from the heater core I assume). Also, the heat does not seem to get hot, even when the car is overheating.

I tried a coolant system stop leak product, but the car still overheats. I am not sure water is actually getting through the heater core, as the inlet hose gets hot, but the outlet seems much cooler, and no hot air comes out with the heat on full bore. The valve is operating from the cable, as I see it open and the heater core inlet hose gets hot between the valve and the fire wall.

Is the small leak in the core creating all these problems?

Can I test this by just bypassing the heater core to see if the car temp will remain normal?

What else should I do to diagnose these problems?

Thanks Mike.................

You can bypass the core or fix it that's up to you but I would change or remove the thermostat first. If it still overheats then start looking at the water pump and radiator. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Not necessarily. It depends on what you mean by a bad heater core. The core will either be leaking or stopped up. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1995 geo prism is heating up

Have a coolant system pressure test done to check for system leaks. check coolant level at the radiator cap. have a compression test done to check for head gasket or cracked head.. Check fan operation and if you have a viscous fan hub replace it . Have a flow test done on the radiator to check for blocked cores.

Car lets out steam and smells like coolant

Sounds like the heater core is leaking. At any rate you say it runs low on coolant. Hence a leak. 9 times out of ten, if you are smelling it, that is because the leak is from the heater core, which is located inside the passenger compartment.

Started overheating one day when idling, but hit the gas and temp went back down. now overheats within 5 minutes and doesnt go back down. coolant seems to disappear slowly, coolant in radiator is bubbly,...

Sounds like you have a leak somewhere. A good place to check first is the heater core. It is on the passenger side under the dash. Check the floor carpet and under the carpet if it is wet or any signs of antifreeze. If so than your heater core is leaking, and since you don't have heat it is of course broken. This could also the the reason why you have bubbly coolant, with air leaking into the system.

I would start with that.

Good Luck! :)

Just replaced heater core. Had heat for first week. Now I have very little heat on passenger side and none on driver side. All vents blow air.

You might have an other coolant leak, but sounds like coolant is not getting entirely into heater core. Check both your heater hoses to see if they are equal temperatures and also the coolant level. If both are ok check to see if there is a heater core valve that when heat is selected it provides vacuum to pull open a valve that directs coolant flow to your heater core. the valve is located in-line with the heater hoses.

I can smell coolant when heater is on and coolant light is on

Sounds like the heater core is leaking. Fill up the coolant and look under the carpet on the passenger side and see if there is not coolant there. IF it is a really minor leak you may be able to use a radiator fix, but do not buy something cheap and follow the directions. If one application does not seal it up, replace the heater core. It is not worth overheating the motor to try more of the sealer; it can clog the coolant passageways in the motor.

Hope this helps

Heater takes to long to get hot and water is dripping form dashboaerd on passenger side i have a 2000 grand jeep cherokee

Sounds like one of two things are happening. Either the hose going to the heater core (on the engine side of the dash) is leaking causing coolant to spray into the passenger compartment or your heater core is leaking which is causing the dripping from the passenger side of the dash. This would also cause a loss of coolant in the engine which would cause the engine to overheat and not enough coolant to get to the heater core to supply heat to the passenger compartment. Check your coolant level (while engine is cold) and refill it with a 50/50 mix of coolant and water after you tighten the leaking hose or replace the heater core. Then start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature. Again let it cool down and then top off the radiator with the 50/50 mix of coolant. Do not under any circumstances open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.

What does a heater core do?

The heater core runs off of the cooling system, it is a small "radiator" behind the dash that sits in a box. when the heater core is full of hot coolant, it gives off heat and the blower motor pushes the hot air to the vents.

If a heater core ruptures, becomes clogged with parasites, or gets blocked in a hose (the 2 leading to the firewall under the hood on the passenger side) it causes the car to overheat, and/or leak.

my suggestion is to have the system pressure tested, and flushed if it checks out OK
