I have a 1992 ford ranger that will not shift into overdrive unless you do it manually in or out so I changed transmissions & this one is doing the same thing

I need to to know what makes the overdrive work is there a switch or senssor because you put it overdrive it will not take off you can put it in drive it will shift through all the grears & shift into overdrive & it works but if you stop without shifting out of overdrive it stays in overdrive & you have to go to park & then drive to get it to go again & that is on both transmissions

The problem is most likely not in the transmission. Since it is doing the same thing with both of them. I would start with checking speed sensor circuit. The speed sensor send signal to the processor and the processor in turn controls shift point etc. You need a really good scanner and monitor PIDS. Watch what the speed sensor is reading and look at fuel trim to make sure the vehicle is seeing what the vehicle is really doing. Your OBD is very primitive compared to todays OBDII, which holds and keeps information. Therefore you have to monitor while driving and situation happens. If you can, try a KNOWN GOOD PCM first. However, don't go out and buy a new one without verifying that it is the PCM

SOURCE: won't shift into overdrive

these cars are a 4 speed auto
it you here the car change 4 times then it is going in to od
best way to try this is by following

  1. go to an open rood where you can do 100kph (60mhp)
  2. have your overdrive turned off (there should be a light on the dash board that comes on)
  3. then turn over drive on and see if the RPM drops
if it dose not work let me know and i will try my best to help you

SOURCE: f150 transmission neutralizes when shifts to overdrive

I have that exact same truck and transmission and My Transmission did the exact same thing about a year ago and there was some kind of snap ring inside the transmission that broke. I originally thought it had to be an electirical problem because the truck shifted fine until OD or if i turned OD off. The 4r70w is a light transmission and i would suggest you have a shift kit put in and they make a heavier kit to beef it up.. Sorry its probably not the new you were looking for.

SOURCE: How do you remove the gear shift lever on a 93 ford ranger?

many of these trucks have a mazda trans in them, to remove these shifters you will need to remove the 4 phillips head screws from the corners of the trim around the shifter boot and pull it up out of your way. it's not necessary to remove the boot from the shifter, just lift it up for access to the top of the trans. at the base of the shifter on the top of the trans you will see a plate attached with torx head screws. remove all but 2 of them, now make sure the trans is in neutral and remove the last 2 screws and pull the shifter straight up. the shifter is now out leaving a big hole open on the top of the trans for dirt to fal into so put a wrag in it or screw a piece of cardboard to it. installation is the reverse. good luck

2002 Ford Ranger throws Trans code p0735 -- 5th gear incorrect ratio. My understanding is basically it's running without 5th gear/overdrive. (It also causes it to shift hard into/out of 2nd, as, from...

to start with there is nothing wrong with the ransmission
It is all electronic faults
the transmission is constant mesh so ratios are not manually changed by done by servos and solenoids
the fault code refers to the TR sensor that can be changed out , the hard shifting is probably dirty oil and the changing between ratios a problem TCM or wiring harness connections
if the transmission oil has not been changed in the last 60K miles , that would be a good place to start, then have the auto transmission professional service center where you are having the oil change done, check out the servo/ solenoids operations

there is a part of the linkage in the steering column, that wears and or breaks,a steering colmn specialist can check this for you and replace it if that is the problem
if that is not the problem, it sounds like you need to take to a transmission mechanic.QUESTION: is the overdrive light on gear shift flashing/ if it is flashing, the problem is definetly in the transmission, not the linkage

How to remove control soleniod on 1992 Ford Ranger auto transmission?

Remove the transmission pan, remove the transmission shifting assembly (19 10 mm head bolts) -- don't worry it will not fall apart -- there are three star shaped screw heads so be sure you have a tool to remove these -- DO NOT TIP the assembly as there are floating ball valves within it -- remove the top plate, take out the clip, replace solenoid & replace the unit -- BE SURE YOU NOTE WHICH OF THE WIRES GO WHEREFROM THE SOLENOID, PRIOR to removeal of the shifting assembly....

1992 A4LD trans problems.

Sounds like the shift kit is warn out in the transmission. The overdrive line may not be able to provide enough hydrolic pressure to engage the gears to move the truck. When you switch to regualr drive, that line is able to build the hydrolic pressure to engage the gears. At a certian speed (for the transmission, certian hydrolic pressure) there is enough pressure to engage the gears in overdrive, but go below that, and you have to start in drive again. If this is the case, there is no easy fix for that and I recomend taking it to a transmission shop to have your shift kit examined. Opening up an automatic transmission requires specalized tools, clean shop enviroment, and knowlage more then the average back yard machanic has.
