The first step ALWAYS to adjust the REAR BRAKE SHOES. The parking brake should not go "out of adjustment" UNLESS the rear brake shoes are:

1. Worn
2. Have recently been replaced and not set correctly
3. Are out of adjustment due to wear.

Turning the adjustment nut (unlike what Autozone seems to imply) is the LAST thing you should do AFTER all other possibilities have been eliminated.

Adjusting the rear brakes can often be accomplished easily in an empty parking lot. Simply accelerate in REVERSE to about 5~10 MPH and stomp on the brake pedal. Repeat this 3~5 times. You will often discover afterward that your forward braking performance has suddenly improved and that Parking brake is now miraculously "back in adjustment."

SOURCE: Removing the rear rotors on

Unless your parking brake is on, they should just slide off-but you sometimes have to 'persuade' it using a hammer and hitting the rotor edge on the inside, rotating it so you tap it off-you do not have to get crazy, but smacking it with a hammer (put a towel over it to avoid scarring it if you feel better) will get it off-a necesary tool in any toolbox is a 4 lb. hammer, comes in handy for just such a problem.

The self-adjuster is inside the drum between the shoes. It may be part of the parking brake assembly. Its a bar with a wheel and a lock lever.

Adjusting the parking brake on a MiTSubichi ENDEAVOUR 2005

If your parking brake is too loose or is not properly adjusted, you may encounter problems while parking, positioning and driving your car. Most of the time, car owners would send their car to a mechanic in order to fix and tighten the parking brake. However, you can actually skip this step and adjust your parking brake yourself. When your car starts to slip on a hill in its park position, you need to start tightening the parking brake.1 Remove the car's center console cover placed around your parking brake level inside your car. This is found between the seat of the driver and the front passenger.2 Use your wrench to turn its adjuster nut found at the end of your parking brake's cable rod. Loosen the adjuster nut with your wrench, while making sure that it does not come off at your parking brake cable rod's end.3 Raise your car rear wheels using your jack, and use your jack stands to support both its rear wheels.4 Pull up your parking brake handle up to two clicks or notches. Tighten your adjuster nut until you feel a slight resistance on your rear wheels whenever you spin them.5 Release your parking brake lever. Check and make sure that your rear wheels are still able to spin freely and without any resistance.6 Pull up on your parking brake lever up to three to five clicks or notches, while making sure that your car's rear wheels are not turning at all.7 Lower the car by adjusting your jack, and remove your jack stands from your car's rear wheels.

How do you adjust the parking brake on a 2005 buick lacrosse

Under the vehicle you will see a cable coming from both back brakes to a "t" in the middle of the vehicle. Tighten the cable till there is almost no slack by turning the nut on the bracket. Click the parking brake one or two clicks and then remove the slack until the cable is barely tight. Now your parking brake is adjusted properly.

I changed the shoes on the Parking brakes on my 2005 Escalade EXT, adjusted the shoe adjusters so the shoes "just" drake when the drums are re-installed, cleaned and re-lubed the mechanical cylinders,...

The first time you use the brakes on a drum the shoes will equalize with each other. This may be the reason it doesn't seem adjusted right. Readjust the shoe adjusters till you can just hear the scrape and try again.

Loose emergency brake on 2004 Saturn Vue

  1. Apply and fully release the park brake several times. Verify that the park brake lever releases completely.
  2. Turn ON the ignition. Verify the red BRAKE warning lamp is not illuminated.
  3. If the red BRAKE warning lamp is illuminated, verify the following:
    • The park brake lever is in the fully released position and against the stop.
    • There is no slack in the park brake cable.
  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disable the SIR system.
  3. Remove the front floor console.
  4. With the park brake lever in the released position, using ONLY hand tools, loosen the adjusting nut completely to the end of the front cable threaded rod.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle.
  6. Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies.
  7. Adjust the rear drum brakes.
  8. Ensure there is no brake shoe drag after adjustment by rotating the brake drums. If drag exists, re-center the brake shoes and perform the brake shoe adjustment again.
  9. Install 2 wheel nuts to the wheel studs and firmly hand tighten in order to retain the brake drums.
  10. Lower the vehicle to permit access to the park brake lever.
  11. Raise the park brake lever 1 detent position. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
