SOURCE: ring and pinion adjustment

hello sir ...

RING AND PINION TOOTH CONTACT PATTERN.—The ring and pinion tooth contact pattern is used to double-check ring and pinion adjustment. To check the accuracy of your adjustments, coat the ring gear teeth with a thin coat of red lead, white grease, hydrated ferric oxide (yellow oxide or iron), or Prussian blue. Turn the ring gear one way and then the other to rub the teeth together, producing a contact pattern on the teeth. Carefully note the contact pattern that shows up on the teeth where the substance used has been wiped off. A good contact pattern is one located in the center of the gear teeth (fig. 5-21). Figure 5-21 shows several ring and pinion gear contact patterns. Study each and note the suggested correction for the faulty contact

SOURCE: noisy diff

diff bearings on way out jack both rear wheels off the ground --turn them by hand good chance you will pick up which side and how bad but it wont keep going for long the longer you leave it the more parts could get damaged

SOURCE: Rear drive train seal had

Yes its very much possible that they must have moved the bearing alignment. And this caused the problem.---------But if the bearings are already worn out, then as per dealers side he is right. If the bearings gets worn out then it can make the seal leak.------------ If the seal is leaking then all you have to pull is the yoke. Pull the seal out and put in a new one. Then install the yoke and tighten it back down. The best way is to mark the nut and pinion before you losen it. When you retighten the nut you will have the same bearing preload. The question is: Did the seal just wear out or did the bearings go bad and they took the seal out? This sounds like a great time to rebuild your differential. New bearings, gaskets and seals. Be sure to pre-lube all the bearings and seals when you install them. It can take a while for the gear lube to get where it needs to be.------------- But if the bearing is got misaligned while fitting, then yes it will cause the damage.-----------Crown wheel got damaged, without disassembling its hard to tell if its damaged. But its not easy to disassemble the crown wheel. ------------ The pinion bearings are fitted to the casing and measurements are taken using Ford tooling to determine the size of the pinion bearing spacer required. A spacer is then made. A trial assembly is then done with the crown wheel and pinion together with new pinion bearings and new carrier bearings and everything is set up to obtain a gear tooth meshing marking. In the final build a specially made pinion bearing sleeve, a new seal and pinion nut are fitted and the pinion bearing rotational torque is set using Ford tooling. The crown wheel and carrier assembly are then fitted and the carrier bearing pre-load and crown wheel and pinion backlash are set up using Ford tooling.-------------And for all this professional tools are required to be checked.Because if wheel is damaged,it has to be replaced.------------- As per the conversation which you mentioned. On that basis it indicates that,if bearing was already faulty, then why the dealer did not tell you while replacing the seal and u joints. He must be aware of that. And if in case the bearings were proper, then its his mistake that he do not fit the parts properly and this caused the problem.----------Still to get the car repaired you can insist the dealer, that he charges less for this repairing.because this repairing is not a easy job for local car mechanics. The dealer has all the required tools as well as torque specifications. So he is the best man to do the repair job for you.But still you try to reduce the repair/service charges, how much you can.----------------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Min./max backlash required on diff for Isuzu KB280DT 1998model after reconditioning & prior to "running in"

around .005" -.010" measured at the crown wheel tooth
if you have back lash at the pinion yoke , that is not the backlash you need to measure as it is a combination of axle spline and side gear clearance in the diff
what is most important is the mesh position of the crown wheel and pinion teeth, preload on the pinion bearings and diff carrier bearings
you will need a workshop manual to get the correct mesh setting and preload readings

Whining noise rear end

if the noise is occurring on acceleration it will be the rear pinion bearing
if it is on deceleration it will be the front pinion bearing
if it comes and goes s you drive normally it is the incorrect mesh between the crown wheel and pinion and indicates worn carrier side bearings allowing the mesh of the crown wheel and pinion to vary
check for correct oil in the diff and check magnet on drain plug for metal bits

1998 dodge durango. howling noise differential.

time to pull the diff centre as the noise is from incorrect positioning of the crown wheel and pinion. This happens from failed pinion bearings or side carrier bearings.. Could be lack of oil or the wrong oil if it is a limited slip diff.

I had my differenctial rebuilt like every thing and have a noise again at about 70-80 km. When I back of the gas it stops

No you shouldn't. If all that was replaced. Lift the vehicle and verify it is coming from the diff. If so, take it back. You didn't mention the vehicle, so there are many ways to torque the pinion bearings in. Do you have straight axles or CV axles. This all makes a difference. Also, if the shop diagnosed it and it isn't fixed, take it back. Don't pay for a bad diagnosis. Diffs aren't cheap. I know. I build them.

How do you change a bearing in the rear differential of a 1994 Chevrolet s10 pickup?

If you have an axle bearing problem then remove that axle but if you have a bearing in the diff itself then the crown wheel and pinion have to come out after you have pulled the axles. If you have no experience with diffs then get a transmission specialist to do it or you will damage the diff at worst or have a noisy diff at best which will eventually destroy the diff.

1999 mustang base v6 noisy rear above 50 mph

check the "u" joints and check that the drive shaft flanges have been properly fitted to the pinion flange or that the "u"joints have been properly fitted into the pinion "ears " of the pinion.. Check that the correct grade of oil was used in the diff and it has the correct amount. New out of the factory diff should not be noisy but if you have a new rebuilt diff then it is possible that the gear mesh is not correct or used gears were used where the best mesh was obtained.

I have replaced bearing on the pinion and crown on nissan 3.2. its has a bad noise. how do i adjust pinion and crown?

Adjustment to crown wheel and pinion has to be done after bearing replacement on the pinion and carrier. It is a method that unless you have done a lot of diff repairs will amount to a trial and error procedure to get it right. Fortunately any work shop manual that you can borrow will have the way to set up the diff and there will be photos and directions on which to move to get the setting right. It is important to get the reading right as correct gear mesh will ensure a long lasting quite diff operation.

Porsche cayenne gearbox

a noise from a diff are , normally a high frequency harmonic sound while driving is from diff pinion bearings
if you decelerate and you get a noise normally as a low grumble ( low drumm noise )to a frequency noise is again the diff pinion bearings
you can distinguish the noise from power on to deceleration
the noise can be most noticeable with a slight load ( 2 people travelling at a steady speed say 60- 80 klm/hr) as a steady but harmonic pitch variation
the noise varies as the load is transferred from the bearing immediately behind the pinion gear to the bearing immediately behind the drive flange or in your case driven gear from the gear box
it is caused by a slight movement of the pinion which varies the correct mesh with the crown wheel , resulting in the whining sound
sorry but noise sounds are very hard to describe

My Honda 2004 CR-V develops a howling noise from the rear of the car after about 20 miles of driving. I have changed the rear differential fluid, and burnished the differential clutches per Honda Service...

A howling noise from a diff is an indication of the gear mesh( pinion to crown wheel) is not correct. Several reasons being worn pinion bearings--loss of preload on the pinion bearings --- crown wheel carrier bearings failing ---not sufficient preload on the bearings---wear on the teeth from incorrect diff oil in use. or simply wrong diff oil. The grade should be 80w90 OEP for normal or special oil for limited slip diffs.

The diff has a wine and i would like to know if there is some adjustment

There is a shim adjustment on the yoke, but this is not usually the whining noise. Check the oil. Remove the plug and the oil should just come out of it. If it doesn't add some 80w90 weight till it does. Ford makes a pretty rugid differential. I have heard these screaming and still last for years. Built ford tough. Just remember to keep check on the oil.
