2004 gmc sierra 1500 5.3 105 amp alternator, new serpentine, new idler pulley, new tensioner, new alternator and new water pump (old on was weeping). Alternator seems to have excess load on it as the belt slips on alternator causing belt to squeel and deposits fine black dust from belt onto front of alternator. I replaced the alternator again and another new belt and the belt is still squeeling. It seems as the alternator has an excess load on it as the squeeling increases when lights and blower motor are turned on. Everything on truck is stock except the radio has been replaced. Have checked all grounds, cables and connections and all are good.

Check alternator output against specs. I suspect that the issue is with the belt not being properly lined up with the pulleys

SOURCE: serpentine belt slips off idler pulley

The A/C pully is supposed to spin freely until the AC is activated to run.. The cranshaft pully does not. Replace the tensioner pully. The belt has to fit in between the grooves on the pullys.

it is decieving. if the tensioner has an extension of about two inches from the base, it takes a 15 mm to lift it, be easy, make sure the wrench is not going to touch anything as you release it after taking the belt off

There is a loud noise near the alternator and after it runs it smells like something burning could it be air pump it has fairly new water pump and new alternator

i would check your tensioner and idler pulley. you may have a bad bearing and its dragging the belt causing friction which then creates the burning belt smell. remove your serpentine belt and spin all pulleys by hand p/s, alternator, water pump, tensioner, idler, a/c. if the pulley is stiff or feels rough then thats the component at fault and you would need to replace that certain component and its also best practice to replace your belt now too.

Engine made a weird noise when i started it & then the power steeing did not work & the battery light came on

the cerpenteen belt that runs the fan, powersteering pump, alternator(battery charger), and water pump broke. if the belt just broke from being old, just replace it. but check all of the pullys to make sure they spin relitivly easy. if you find one that dosen't spin easily, it could need replaced too.

How do you install an alternator 95 gmc sierra 1500

1] disconnect the positive battery cable. 2] remove the serpentine belt.  you need a socket wrench to remove the tension from the idler arm pulley. 3]disconnect the battery wire from the alternator, and unclip the other smaller wire from the other side of the alternator. 4] remove the bolts that hold the alternator to the engine. 5]install the new one in the reverse order hope this helps

Serpentine belt popping off

ONE OF THE PULLEYS ARE WORN OUT AND NOT ALIGNED PROPERLY WITH THE OTHERS. LOOK AT THE TENSIONER AND IDLER PULLEYS. ONE OF THESE COULD BE THE CAUSE. REMOVE THE SERPENTINE BELT AND ROTATE THE PULLEYS BY HAND TO SEE WHICH ONE IS EITHER SQUEAKING OR LOOSE ON ITS BEARING. REPLACE THE BAD ONE AND YOU SHOULD BE ALL SET. HOPE THIS HELPS. PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED. THANKS FOR AN HONEST RATING AND FOR USING FIX-YA. GOOD LUCK

1996 Grand AM 3.1L serpentine belt replacement

Try this procedure.

To replace a worn belt, locate the idler or generator pulley.

0900823d8004ed45.jpg

Loosen the hold-down fastener for the idler or generator pulley.

0900823d8004ed46.jpg

Pry the idler or generator pulley inward to release the belt tension and remove the belt.

0900823d8004ed47.jpg

Match the old belt up for size with the new replacement belt.

0900823d8004ed48.jpg

Observe the belt routing diagram in the engine compartment.

0900823d8004ed49.jpg

Install the new belt over each of the drive pulleys. Often the manufacturer recommends a sequence for feeding the belt around the pulleys.

Install the belt squarely in the grooves of each pulley.

0900823d8004ed75.jpg

Before adjusting belt tension, check for proper pulley alignment. This is especially critical with serpentine belts. Measure the belt deflection in its longest span. If a belt tension gauge is available, use it and compare the tension to specifications.
If a belt is too tight, wear to bearings for the water pump, alternator, and engine crankshaft can result.
Some late-model Chrysler engines require a torque reading to be taken when tension is applied to the generator drive belt. This is especially important on the longer, multiribbed V-belts.

0900823d8004ed76.jpg

Pry the idler or generator pulley to adjust the belt to specifications.

0900823d8004ed77.jpg

Tighten the idler or generator pulley fastener.

0900823d8004ed78.jpg

Start the engine and check the belt for proper operation.

Any more questions please ask. Good luck.
