What car, you never said? NOR YEAR?
park lock out feature;. its broken , they do that. (BTSI system)
got A/T? or M/T both auto and stick shift have lockout.

this feature (pain) has many failure points.
any cable that jams, there are 2 , one to tranny or ignition
switch. and the brake solenoid unlocker in shift handle.
and the button, to unluck shifter, brake switch (no brake lights/)
to diagnosis it is easy , dismantle the console at shifter
then disconnect cables to find if one is stuck, (easy huh?)
and defeat the solenoid, by hand or 12v applied. and check the button
that it does in fact release.
NOT PARK LOCKOUT: (for if not on flat ground?)
reason 2 , driver, parked on a hill with tire to curb and did so
not setting brakes first (or bad ebrake ) and now the tranny parking
pawl is jammed , opps. so wiggle the steering and wiggle shifter,
or have some one push car forward (parked up hill on right) to release
parking pawl. (or gorilla it, ask bubba to muscle it out of park.)
if down hill , well, you get the idea..... pain.. gotta love A/Ts not.

I have a 2006 HHR with no reverse lock out. I have read replacing the shifter assembly with a 2009 will cure the problem. Will this later shifter work with the cables without problems.


Yes 2006-2010 shifters and hardware are 0interchangable., check brake pedal to switch adjustment for solenoid interlock release arm, interlock solenoid may be damaged or misaligned. when you depress brake pedal the brake switch sends signal to the BCM (Body Control Module) in turn sends current to interlock solenoid causing arm to retract releasing shift lever. Please note that interlock solenoid is mechanically actuated to the extended lock position when interlock solenoid is not electrically energized.

97 ford e350 econoline club wagon , did i not align the shift interlock and the shift interlock solenoid when replacing broke shift tube?


i think you should go back and remove and refit the part carefully do the operation mate ill be good check on youtube .

Transmission won't shift into gear only park works no prior problems just all of a sudden stop Lincoln Continental 2001


I would say it has something to do with this !
Shift Interlock System An ignition/shifter interlock mechanism is installed to prevent shifting the transaxle out of the PARK position unless the ignition switch is rotated to RUN and the brake pedal is applied. The floor shift interlock system consists of:
  • an actuator assembly integral to the ignition/shifter interlock cable assembly.
  • a bracket retaining the actuator.
  • the necessary wiring.
The solenoid is energized when the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position, locking the transaxle range selector lever in the PARK position. When the brake pedal is applied and the stoplight switch (13480) is activated, the ignition/shifter interlock actuator is deactivated and the transaxle range selector lever can be moved out of the PARK position.

Gear shifter will not come out of park


Probably a problem with shifter interlock . This interlocker will not let gear shifter move without your foot on the brake pedal . , brake switch sends a voltage signal to usually A BCM - body control module , which controls a solenoid which unlocks the shifter interlocker . My 2007 Lincoln MKZ gear shifter is getting stuck in park and comes out after trying a little while, not every time but its increasing more and more.


On your vehicle there is a shifter interlock system ,it's a safety feature . Doesn't allow shifter to be put into gear if your foot isn't on the brake pedal .

I cant get my shifter to move out of park, i just replaced my ignition lock cylinder could it be some type of theft prevention?


They might. The shift interlock solenoid is controlled by the brake light switch. When the brake pedal is depressed the switch sends a signal to the interlock solenoid attached to the shifter assembly to allow it to release. Check to see if the brake lights are operational. If not, suspect a problem with the brake light switch. If brake lights are working, possible wiring to shift interlock solenoid or solenoid itself causing the problem. Your vehicle may be equipped with an interlock release button located close to the shifter to allow it to come out of park that can be depressed to release the shifter. Owners manual may provide more information on this procedure

Shifter stuck in park,when engin is running. Able to move shifter if igniion swith is turned, but not to started


The problem sounds like it is the shifter interlock solenoid located on the steering column is not releasing the shifter lever. The shifter interlock is supposed to release the shifter lever when the ignition is in the run position and the brake pedal is pressed down, and I have found that about 90% of the time the problem is either a bad switch on the brake pedal lever, or it will be the wires that connect to the switch on the brake pedal lever, and I have found many times that the wire is actually broken right up inside of the wire connector and hanging on by the insulation making it appear to still be connected. Most vehicles use only one multi-function switch on the brake pedal lever to control functions like the brake lights and the cruise control, but Ford products are good at using two switches on the brake pedal lever. Be sure to check all of the wires to the switch(s) on the brake pedal lever very well for broken wires especially at the connectors to the switches. If you can use a power probe or a volt meter to check that power is flowing through the switch(s) properly, and you do find that the switches have power to them and through them when the brake pedal is pushed down, then the shifter interlock solenoid will either have a broken wire at it, or the shifter interlock solenoid is malfunctioning and will need to be replaced.

Key stuck


Hello. Your problem is in the area called Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI). The shifter assembly in the console has a switch-solenoid (shift interlock) that has to send a release signal to the key release solenoid in the steering column. Replacement of the shifter assembly or shift interlock solenoid normally resolves the problem. regards, Joe
