You have to back track the wire from the sending unit to the guage. If there is no power when you put your volt meter to the wire and the body you should get movement. There could be a break in the wire, or it could be a bad guage or a sending unit. obviously the sending unit is the hardest to fix. So start with the wire, then the guage then the sending unit. If you do replace the sending unit. I personaly would replace the wire no matter what. One solid wire with a good heat and weather proof coating.

Why won't the fuel gauge work?

The power wire from the sending unit runs to the gauge. Since it is showing 3/4 all the time. It is a break in the wire or really high resistance. I would check resistance of the ground wire first. If it is good(less than 5.0 ohms), I would replace the power wire from the pump to the gauge. I assume the gauge goes to empty with the key off. If not the gauge is bad.

2001 Buick Century, fuel gauge shows correct when I first start the car, and the "low fuel" light comes on at the correct time, but otherwise, always shows full. Can't be the sending unit, since it is...

Only four tings it can be. The sending unit, the gauge, wiring or the PCM. So you are saying that you keep your car full all the time? Replace the sending unit. 99% of the time it is the sending unit. .9% of it could be a gauge. .1% is the PCM.

Fuel gauge drops rapidly

No issues that I know of but definitely sounds like a bad sending unit in fuel tank.

1993 volvo940. Fuel guage works intermittant , now has stopped. Low fuel light works. Any thoughts

Its either a bad ground wire to the sending unit. The sending unit itself. The gauge itself.
If you ground the wire that connects to the sending unit in the tank the gauge should show full. Disconnected the gauge should show empty. this will test the gauge. Most often there is a ground wire going to the sending unit which corrodes.

Check the sending unit in the tank. I dont think the gauge it self is bad, not that it couldnt happen.
