Windows fog up

In the winter, my windshield, rear window, and all other windows in the car fog up to the point you cannot see a thing. The heat works. When you turn the defrost on with hot air, the windshield defrosts. The cold air rear defrost must be on to defrost rear windows. What is going on? What should I fix?

Glass fogs up because of the hot moist air in the car form your breaths and body warmth. Ac units work by removing the humidity from the air by having the hot moist air collect on the ac evaporator fins and is drained off . As the humidity becomes very low the glass clears so by the use of the ac the glass will clear very quickly. Now the problem becomes a question of you want to be warm. Simply run the heater as well and you get hot de-humidified air IN some cars it is called climate control

There is too much moisture inside the cabin. Either something is leaking water into the car, or your fresh air setting is not working on the hvac system. You can not run the system on recirculate and get rid of the moisture.

SOURCE: -10 c temp on highway, full defrost on windshield,

If your thermostat is fine make sure your fan motor is turning at the proper speeds. If it is blowing lower then normal clean or replace air filters. They are located in a trap door in the glove box. good luck.

windows fogging up
well that takes 2 things working to do that 3 really
1: heat, you have heat. and blower works.
2: you need the dampers to work, to send a/c side air to the windshield. (it mixes heat and a/c flows)
3: the A.C must work it is the DEHUMIDIFIER PART.

i do not understand at all the sticking thing,
are you saying the controls are failing, ?

HI,
I think you are experiencing normal condensation,
try putting the heat and AC control to the position that blows a small amount of conditioned air up through the defrosters. This dries the windshield.
Good Luck !!!!!!!!!!!!

When we turn on the heat, the windshield fogs terribly, and "for good" making it nearly impossible to clear it up again. ONLY the AC keeps the windshield from fogging - even in the Winter! can't tell you...

Thats normal, when the defrost button it pushed, the a/c compressor is on, and you can adjust the temp of the air. With the a/c is on, it takes the moisture out of the air. So, after the engine is warm, you can get warm dry air to defog the windows.

Windows fog up,small anti-freeze smell

The early sign of a heater core leak is the smell of coolant, the reason is that only vapor is leaking now, it will gradually get worse in most cases and coolant will start comming out the heater box condensation drain.

99 Grand Am GT windows fog up

Fog on the windows is caused by moisture in the air condensing on the cold glass. You probably knew that. So the solution to your problem is to reduce the humidity in the car or warm the glass above the dewpoint. Running the AC will help because any moisture in the air will condense on the much colder evaporator coils before it gets to the windows, but as soon as you turn the AC off that moisture goes right back into the air. Fresh air from outside will help if the moisture level in the outside air is lower, which it ussually is in the winter. The only sure solution is to warm the glass.
You may want to check a service manual and see if there is an air filter somewhere in the cabin heat plenum. If so you may want to replace it. Defrosters and side vents should provide plenty of warm air to clear all windows and it sounds like your just not getting enough air flow. If you're not really into getting behind the dash and tinkering with the heater plenum, you might consider a small 12 volt heater like the ones available at auto parts stores, or you could just let the cabin warm up well before driving. There are also glass treatments that you can use to prevent fogging, I used one for years on a motorcycle helmet, These are ussually a wax and or soap base so they have to be cleaned off and reapplied periodically, but they do work well.
