Sounds like the starter is not disengaging the fly wheel quickly like it should when you turn the key the starter cog connects upto a fly wheel that has teeth all around it when the teeth of starter cog connect between teen on wheel it spins it to crank your car then goes back to starter if you hold your key on after starting the noise you hear is the starter cog(teeth ) still engaged in wheel if this is the sound it needs to be serviced not neccassarily replaced

Can a cam shaft synchronizer make a rattling noise ?They usually make a chirping noise when they go bad. I was told by a Ford tech that it was the synchronizer making the noise. This is a 01 Windstar.

Starter makes funny noise but starts, sometimes

probably the bendix spring is not fully returning try taking starter off and lubricate the bendix and try that, but usually once this starts to be a problem replacing the starter is the solution

Hyundai Sonata starts sporatically makes a whirling sound when not starting

You're right. the starter should be mounted somewhere along where the engine is attached to the transmission.

95 ranger ext cab turn key sometimes starter engages somtimes and other timesjuyst a whirling sound can you help /

the whirling sound is the starter drive, it has a one-way clutch built into it and it is going out it is possible to replace the starter drive but in most cases it is more cost effective to replace the starter....GOOD LUCK

Turn key all light come on as a normal start. but when key is turned nothing happens. no noise nothing.. keep trying and eventully starts.Sometimes 3 or 4 times.. Sometimes 10 min. later. it can be days...

You didnt list the type of car this is, the most common thing that causes this is the starter, i just had a saturn, the customer had the same problem we told her it may be the starter but cant be 100% sure until it actted up, she didnt want to replace it unless we were sure, so we kept and drove the car around for 5 days and finally the last day it didnt start and it was the starter , same problem turn key and nothing no noise and no start, i would have the starter replaced and go from there, its a mater of time before the car just wont start, hope this is helpful.

Saab 1885 900 se has whirling noise when trying to

If the noise is just a spinning sound and not a grinding, than you're starter solinoid is probably bad.
You're best bet is to replace the starter. Hope this helps.

2005 XC90 T6 AWD making a whirling noise upon acceleration

Add me to the list. Just got back from a Volvo dealership in Chicago and was told the 'winding' noise we're experiencing during deceleration in our 2004 XC90 is due to a failing transmission,so i would suspect the same accelerating. hope all works out for you

Whirling Noise

Sounds like fuel pump pressurizing the fuel system. They do that for 2-3 seconds and then it stops (for fuel injected vehicles).

96 Achieva has starting problems

The solinoid switch on yor starter is not engaging the engine flexplate; charge your battery then try again if the engine starts replace the battery if the car does not replace the starter.
the solinoid gets weak and needs more power to push into the flexplate and, the switch contacts in the starter can also get burned increasing the need for more power to work properly also check the battery cables they must be clean and, tight
