My 94 wrangler won't take 5th gear all other gears are fine except 5th the shifter will move into the 5th position but it won't pull ,it's like it's in neutral,
Can i assume you pulled the side plug on tranny and the level
is right there? or gone way down, ever do a 50k service? to it?
M/T tranny (not auto) what engine? the m./t varies by HP of ENGINE.
If its really in 5th ( i bet not)
if the RPM rises fast that is called clutch slip
yes, clutch bad.
if not in 5th actual rpm will rise fast too. slip,
if the other gears wroke like 4th at wide open throttle up hill
gee the chutch is good.
so its not going in to 5th (for lots of reasons)
but 1 reason , is easy.
-AX 4/5/15 transmission
this tranny has a shift tower. (that thing on top that the shifter lever
fits in to)
most tranny that fail to actual shift into gear
is caused by a $1 plastic part failure
so pull the shifter off top of the shift tower.
and look, is the plastic buffer parts all bad, missing, cracked or
destoryed, sure they all end there... all.
i can also remove the shifter, lever.
and shift to 5ht by hand, and see that it DOES.
it either does, or does not.
if it does, the lever parts are bad.
that simple.
see part 61 (im guessing which of 5 tranny it is , )

i had drove it to work the day before[40miles]with no problem at all, then the next morning i stsrted to work and when i went to 5th gear it was nothing there,no pop no grind or nothing just like it was in neutral ,im really stumped on this one any help would be appreciated
oh yeah, it's a 1994 jeep wrangler with a 4cy. with a 5 speed but i don't know which kind of tranny it is, if it's a a-5 or what.
there is only 1 first test. does the end of the shiter rod actually work, that is does it actually index the shift rods, and forks, to reach 5th, nothing else matters, if id does NOT, then you are NOT in 5th gear but neutral, its that simple pull the shift rod, see the damage there? many have a plastic buffer end, its bad. when you move this shift lever, it moves a shifting pocket (H pattern) and that pocket move the rail rods, they move the shift forks. that part must work, if not , you miss shifts. 99% of time the pastics are bad. seen 100s. like that may be more. if you run a box dry the forks weld to the gear sliders. its not that. and locks in gear. it just the shifter tip, see 1million hits on google for all cars M/T its like #1
part 61 , did you miss my photo? see part 61, that be bad. its $1
on many m/T gear boxes, you can remove the shift lever from the tower, and swift it to 5th, with a BF screwdriver.
here is one example , you move the rods backwards. to get 5th
this is the 1>2 shift, 5/R is on other side. on my jeep its 6th gear.08 JK
see this photo, see the shift picket the lever plastic tip fits. that be not moving right.
your engine 4liter it got AX15 box. like above. see the plastic do hickey below.
see that end part, its nice and clear in the photo, that is bad. I BET. you clutch is good, im sure you keep oil fresh so, do expect a $1 piece of platic to fail, it prevents shifter buzzz like old 50s cars did.....
im sure you know how to paste a URL link right. above, cut and paste to browsers URL box?
i'm going to pull the shifter tomorrow and check it out maybe it will be the plastic piece you were telling me about , i'll let you know tomorrow. thanks again.
the car shifts to 5th and works sometimes, the gears are good. and if they are good (ive restored many 5sp) then it either the $1 plastic gone, or the shift rail detent locking system is bad. The manual box has a way to engine 2 gears at once, inside, this system prevents this from happening, using detent ball locks in the rail. its very rare for these to fail. 2 gears at once, driving , causes tranny to explode. (crack open like an egg and drop gears to road) that plastic part in your car, is way too old, im sure of it.
well i got the shifter out and the plastic piece was good, i took a screw driver and moved it into 5th gear and still had nothing, so i guess my next thing is to take the tranny out and try to fix it,
oops ,that is not good. broken fork, if the shift rods move to 100% 5th gear the fork is bad.the fork moves the acutal 5th counter gear i to dogs, if the syncro blocker ring (say) was mangled, it would not move 100% in to gear. the forks love to die first by running low lube. if low they overheat glow red hot and melt and then snap off, never seen one ever do that with clean full lube. ever. (exceptions) on tranny i hand had defective forks that were never heat treated and were like butter, failed in 3000 miles new car.
sorry its box out time, really. be sure the shift trann on the floor, i use a huge drill motor on the input shaft (taped) and shift all gears on garage floor, over and over,. till good feelings...
one more, some tranny have set screw in the fork hub that falls out. or a defective split pin, same deal. falls out and fork just drifts.
is this gonna be a real hard job and if its just a pin that has camee out am i going to have to completely take it a part to replace the pin,i've never been into a 5 speed tranny before but i guess i'm going to try this so i may be coming back to you for more imfo, so thanks again.
the fsm pages for this tranny are here. for YJ jeep, this boxes are dream to work on, it slides out on AX5 (Ax15?) the only tricks inside are the lock balls,. see tranny pages here, next link.
ax-15 is for 4liter engiee, page chpt.21-pg32 :) oops, see page see restictor pins on top sides of shifter, what if the wore loss, the shiter might fail in 5th, (left restrictor) lets look for adjustment proceedure. page 42 is 5th set screw, i see....5th has its own rail, if the tranny is quite in neutral and in all forward gears, just pulling it out of main case, you will see why fifth is messing up. page 64, the restrictor pin are factory machined, perfect, so what if the left is loose casing the main shift rod to over travel. that be next check fo sure, and a 5min job. Im sure (if necessary) if the box is pull , from case , and fitht testing now, it will be obvious why it will not.
ax-5 is for 2.5L jeep engine.
ok i finely got around to pulling the tranny and taking it a part, i found a broke snap ring that holds 5th gear on the main shaft when the snap ring broke it let the gear slid on the main shaft so no 5th gear.like to never found the new snap ring but i have it now and got it all put back together , so tomorrow i'll put it back in and see if it will fun. thanks for the help.
thats really great news. you found it. Nice work !
well i got it back in today and it ran out just fine, but i'll tell you i never want to do it again it was rough on an old man. so thanks again for the advice.
wish i could have gave a hand.... be proud, you deserve it ! cheers !

SOURCE: '99 wrangler has trouble shifting to 2nd gear - 4th gear occasionally slips to neutral
If you can see where the shifter goes through the floorboard, make sure the shifter is not hitting the floor.
There could be interfierence under the car also.
SOURCE: 94 Jeep Wrangler intermittently stalls when put in reverse, drive
Take the air inlet hose off where it enters the throttle body and take a look at the throttle plates. It is likely that they’re dirty and have a build-up of carbon deposits. That is the most common cause for stalling that we see in the shop for your vehicle. Sometimes all it takes is a good cleaning to cure the stalling problem. There is an idle speed setting on your Jeep, but to check and/or perform this service step requires the use of a computer scan tool for your vehicle. If the cleaning doesn’t help ask a repair facility to check and reset, if needed, the minimum idle speed on your Jeep.
Thnx.

Sounds like you may have bent a shift fork or your cluster gear has some missing teeth on it now. I would venture to say that is it a bent shift fork. This will require the transmission be removed to gain access to inspect and repair.
