Can we disconnect turbo?

Hi, I know it might sound silly, but my son has found a Volvo 850 he wants to buy.. But isn't allowed to drive a turbo by law for another two years.. Is there any way we could disconnect turbo function without causing any subsequent damage?

If you remove the turbo from that car, the car will not run very well because the computer is setup to run with a turbo device, it need the air flow to force the fuel where it need to go. after removing the turbo you are going to have fuel issue, stay running, be fore you buy it go to the owner ask if they would mind if you or them disconnect the belt from the turbo charger and restart the car, see how well it runs, try and drive it, if every thing works okay, than buy the car and leave the belt off the charger.

You would have to remove all the turbo components and air intake hoses, purchase used non turbo components and install them. Even then the vehicle would not run correctly as it has a computer set up for a turbocharged car. In short no.

SOURCE: Volvo 850 1996 4 door sedan Speedometer not working

Mark,

As long as you have the instructions to replace the speeometer drive gear go ahead, and do it.

One BIG question I have for you....how do you know that the mileage is not way over what you've been told?...

small tip for the future.......if you ever look at another car for anybody, and the speedometer doesn't work...pass up the car..there is always another one down the road waiting for you.

Hopefully this will help you, and thanks for letting us at FixYa.com help out...happy New Year

SOURCE: VOLVO 850 RADIO/CD REPLACEMENT

Yes, its simply to remove the radio wich is there (two clamps, one on each side) retract the connectors.
You might need to buy a compartment to conceal the part of the opening that will be exposed when removing the bigfront-radio.
(Volvo-dealers can help you) And a cableset wich contains the connectors to the Radio-connectors in the 850 and directly to the radio you buy. (Most radio-dealers hava all kinds)

New radio mounts in only e few hours. All included.
Theese Volvos are very well prepeared for this.

I'm interested in a 1995 Volvo Turbo 850. Good shape, 130K miles runs good. Don't know anything about Volvo's? Would this be a smart purchase for first car for my teen son?

Good, solid, safe, reliable and very comfortable car. Will use about 9L/100k. Would steer away from the turbo if he is under 21 as this will put your insurance premiums through the roof (they see 'turbo' and think 'sports car'). Rust isn't normally a problem with this model. So in one word, YES.(I live in good old Australia so read with this in mind)

How or where on the internet can i find a free repair manual for a volvo 1995 850 turbo

Not a lot of websites offer free manuals. I tried searching for the volvo model 850 turbo on a torrent search and found it. Torrents are a p2p file sharing. They can be risky to download just because of jerks who puts viruses in there. I also can find virtually any repair manual on any model car at my local library and its free. Hopes this helps.

Hi, I have a 1996 Volvo wagon 850 turbo. I just bought it and when you hold the rpm's at 3 and a half it was blowing out smoke after about 600 miles it stoped smelling like burning oil and doesn't blow out any smoke. But I use a court of oil in about every 150 miles. What could this be?
Thank's Jodie

Turbo does'nt work

How do you know the turbocharger doesn't work? Just because the boost gage doesn't show boost PSI doesn't mean the turbo isn't working. Junkyard or rebuilt turbos aren't cheap but they're less expensive than a new one from a dealer. Don't buy a old turbocharged Volvo they're money pits. They always break down and parts are really expensive (and hard to find on older models) and you have to find a mechanic that specializes in fixing Volvo's.

Can i put a turbo on a 96 volvo 850 GLT

The silly answer is: Of course! You can do anything with enough time and money. Take it apart, put in dished pistons to get the compression ratio down to where it will tolerate boost. Spend a kings ransom on parts to mount the turbo and manage the engine.
Or,
The smart answer; No! It makes no sense, sell it and buy the turbo flavour. They are actually fairly cheap, way less than building it and you get all the upgrades that come with the turbo option.

Hope this helps :-)
