Transmission There was a popping noise under my car and it would hesitate when I put it in gear... I turned left and it sounded like something broke and then I couldn't go forward or backwards and even in the parked position it still rolls backwards unless I put the emergency brake on... did I destroy my transmission

This is a tranmission linkage problem. The car may be in park but the linkage arm well sometimes slip of or sometimes just run crooked as you switch through the gears. My car has also done the same thing until I recapped the arm with a new lock washer

SOURCE: the car worked fine, then

Did you notice if your speedometer quit working at the same time? If so, there is a glimmer of hope, it may be a vehicle speed sensor problem. Otherwise, it sounds like the trans just took a dump. Try shifting the trans into ALL gears (including 2 and 1) to see if that makes a difference.

My 97 ford exlorer will not go into gear except when I put it in 4 wheel low. transmission has been making a popping noise for a while.

If it won't go into gear, sounds like you've run out of transmission fluid. That grinding sound when you turn the shaft by hand, sounds like you've run it for a bit too long without fluid and wore the gears down. Start it up and check the trans fluid with dipstick. If none on stick, put some in it. You may have already ruined the transmission though. But you never know. Try putting fluid in. Might work.(for a while)

My1997 gran prix makes grinding noise when put in park

Sounds like either one of the axle shafts came out of the transmission or a cv joint broke. I bet when in park you can still roll the car.

It sounds like the hyd. clutch is not working. If the clutch won't release then you can't get the transmission in a gear while it is running, without that grinding noise.

Hello;
From your description it sounds as though something broke internally in the transaxle. I believe all Buicks were automatics. Not really any thing to do but drop the trans oil pan and see if there is a lot of metal in the pan. If so a replacement trans axle and converter would need to be installed. Hope this helps. Rate me highly and if you have additional questions please let me know.
